Possible recall on the 86 regarding valve spring

If it runs great now and continues to run great, I'd forget about it. Cars that had sudden valve spring failure experienced it at very low mileage, from the reports I've read.

If you do have sudden valve spring failure, then take it in and they'll perform the recall work all the same - there is no advantage to having it done early, other than you're controlling when it goes in.

If a spring breaks, it won't be as simple as the recall. It'll likely need a whole new engine at that point. It'll drop the valve and mash it between the piston and head.

Forgive me if I'm jaded, but that's essentially what risk you sign up for with this recall anyway

That’s why I’m so torn. The cars out of warranty and it seems like a gamble either way. I read in another thread that there has been more failed engines from the recall than the actual problem they’re trying to fix.
Did you have the recall done?

I recognize your user name from the failure thread. I’d be a bit jaded as well. I feel like either way I’ll never fully trust this engine again. Might have to upgrade to a 17MY. I can’t imagine driving any other car now.

Oh, J-Mac, I'm getting the feeling that you're letting this valve recall thing interfere with you enjoying driving your car.

My 2013 (with < 25,000 miles) has been recalled, but it's running good now, so, I'm in the mind set, iffen it ain't broke, don't let em break it.

If I'm out on the road and a weak/broken spring leaves a valve in the combustion chamber and the piston smashes the hell out of it, I will have it toed to the nearest dealer and trade it in (give it away), for a new car on the lot and continue my vacation.

Meanwhile, I ain't gonna worry about it.

I still don't have my back. They've rebuilt it twice, they still get oil leaks every time they test drive it and have to tear it down again. This is just an issue with my dealership, but given that it feels like a risk to have it taken apart at all I'd try to avoid it. My situation is more fortunate than others - not only do I have a second car, I've got the budget set aside to do a new engine myself if they just can't get it and I don't trust it. Which I don't.

My hesitation aside, I really wouldn't think about it. If your car is still running great, I'm sure it will continue to

Did you have the recall done?

I haven't, and I'm even more torn. Mine needs the drivers side valve cover gasket (or sealant, whatever it is) replaced for a slight oil leak and also needs the clutch/TOB replaced. Valve cover is free with the recall, and the clutch would be parts cost only.


So I can let them do it and hope it's fine, or I can pay a shop I trust to pull the engine to do the gasket and clutch, and at that point it'll be getting a new engine since mine has ~176k kms and over 50 track days on it.


I'm leaning towards chancing it since the absolute worst case is it spins a bearing after they "fix" it and I have to pay another shop to swap the engine anyway.

The recall does cover a repair that results from the broken spring, in the case the recall was not done. Of course, you run the risk of proving that was the issue.

I had mine done early and fortunately there have been no issues. However, at this point, and with over 140,000 miles on the engine, I wouldn't have it done and take my chances. Works case, you get a new engine. Seems OK to me.

No worries. I’m still enjoying it every chance I get. It’s just a toy for me.
I just don’t trust it to keep it long term anymore. This was gonna be a project car eventually.

That’s just nasty. And exactly what I’m trying to avoid. I feel bad for anyone with this as they’re daily car. I bought this as a summer toy and have another vehicle as well if things go bad. I’m hoping now that the money I’m saving for a 4x4 winter toy doesn’t have to get used for this car.

That is a tough spot to be in. At least mine works perfectly at the moment. I’m definitely chancing it for now. Just feels too risky at this point. Might have to call around and see if any of the dealerships around here have done any yet. Just for curiosity.

Well that’s good to hear. I wasn’t aware of that.
I can’t imagine it being any harder than trying to prove the tech dropped sealant into the engine and clogging things up. I don’t know the first thing about any kind of engine failure though. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I guess I should add that's my interpretation of the recall (it has language allowing for reimbursement of persons that had to have work done due to a spring failure). YMMV of course.
