All the different ways of mounting plates end up looking strange to me after the initial being different feeling wears off.
I think best is still the approved factory location for visual/aero symmetry, as well as still providing sufficient air flow to radiator, and the least "distracting" (2nd only to not running plates of course).
If I was more concerned about looks, I would just go without the plate period.
I am more concerned about not being hassled (as you get in downtown LA), so I just mount it in the ugly-nose-booger factory position, which I don't even notice much since it's in the least distracting position.
Even for looks, I would think people will see a nice clean car, rather than being distracted to the strange thing on the side or inside the mouth angled up/down/etc.
Just my opinion, of course

Does the front grill serve any practical purpose (such as airflow)? Is it ok to put the license plate over it?

Well as you can see from this pic http://www.grimmspeed.com/catalog/im...0207_600_1.jpg

you can connect the tow hook adapter all the way to the left (looking at it) which would bring the majority of the plate bracket towards the middle but it would not be centered but would cover the black portion of the BRZ bumper only and not the painted area.

Hope that makes sense - Benny

First post here.

I have been lurking in these forums ever since I pre-ordered my FR-S in March. Today I will contribute a little on this front plate topic. I picked up my car in late June and received my license plates by late July.

I have been debating whether to mount the front plates for the past three weeks and decided that I should. I just didn’t want to deal with getting a fix it ticket or getting a fine from parking enforcement when I park on the street.

I was able to see a few cars sporting the Grimmspeed plate relocator kit when I attended the Scion FRS Drive Tour Los Angeles on August 5th. That offset design is just not for me. Most of the 70 cars in attendance didn’t sport any front plates at all but one front plate location setup caught my eye. That car belonged to Moto. I chatted with him and he just said he zip tied the standard FRS bracket onto the grill.

Below is what I did. The only items you need are a couple of zip ties and the factory plate bracket kit.

The front bumper has two screw tap marks which will help you place the zip ties through the correct holes. In the picture below, you can see a hanger which I used to pull one end of the zip tie through the grill since it is hard to stick a finger through the slats and the bottom of the bumper is sealed with a plastic cover. Above the hanger you can barely see the screw tap.

Once you have the zip ties in place, it will be easy to secure the plate bracket in place as seen below.

You should cut off the excess zip tie ends. You can now place your license plate and frame onto the bracket using the included bolts. The picture below just shows a license frame being mounted.

You won’t be able to see the zip ties with the license plate installed. The plate bracket seems securely held by the zip ties but it will move a little if you push hard enough. I hope you found this helpful and at least it gives you another option for mounting front plates.

The plate does slant 17 degrees. I used a protractor and a level to measure. Yes, very nerdy, lol.

I wouldn't worry about it though, the slant follows the curve of the grill so it looks natural.

Is that legal in Ontario, Canada?

Wait I found this:

Section 13 of Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act requires that plates be plainly visible at all times and that the view of the plate is not to be obscured in any way.

If the plate mounting position is altered or the original plate mounting is replaced by different hardware, the plate must continue to be displayed on the vehicle in such a way that it is still clearly visible. Plate visibility in the new location or with the new hardware must be comparable, when viewed from directly in front of or behind the vehicle, to that provided by the vehicle manufacturer’s mounting.

Remember guys don't remove the bottom plastic tray to get into the inside drill, I tried last night, after removing 16-20 pieces (bolts/fasteners) there's two more inside that hards to remove, it'll be quite hard to put back.

I wouldn't advice anyone to do so, just use zip ties in a license plate mount and then screw the license plate and cover on.
