Ummm his key would be in the ignition. It is a FRS.

BRZ has multiple sensors in the inside and outside of the car to detect your key and behave differently depending on where your key is. Like if I'm standing on the drivers side with the door open, my passenger still cant pop open the trunk using the button on the trunk itself.

The dash button does not need key-in on the FR-S, it is constantly powered unless you hit the disable switch in the trunk. Same with the key button. Only thing is, unlike some cars, the trunk button on the key only opens the trunk. But from your explanation of the BRZ it sounds like you can't use the outside trunk button unless you're near it with the key on you (and thanks for clearing that up). Since the FR-S doesn't have any sort of alarm execpt the special models that are basically BRZs in Scion skin, I guess they don't have to keep the trunk locked along with the doors.
