In regards to the power, as I mentioned I think the auto’s weight and taller gearing were masking it somewhat. The gap between a ‘22 auto and a tuned FT86 is noticeable, but didn’t change the experience in a meaningful way. I have a ZX10R with as much horsepower as an 86, and a GTI running boost, so whilst the extra oomph is appreciated, other factors can be more important to me when it comes to the platform (particularly steering feel). You put it well - the sense of urgency when ringing it out feels pretty similar in a tuned car, but you're carrying more speed in the '22.

Jokes aside, I would like to see it with body-colored bits vs the black plastic. It's why I think I prefer the darker blue for this generation because the black blends in better.

I also hadn't noticed just how much smaller the rear quarter window is. The more pronounced Hoffmeister kink has taken away a pretty valuable chunk of visibility that I use for backing out of parking spaces or for blindspot check on the road.

Agree that darker colours suit the ‘22 twins best. I’d go the black or gunmetal to integrate the black plastics a little better than the WRB I tested.

some contrast is nice though. like in first gen i preferred the trd kits for both zenki and kouki over plain stock since adding a bit of satin black gave the car a bit more contrast rather than a plain monocolor body

In regard to aesthetics, it's difficult to divorce the inferred racer boy image from the first gen because they've been abused and riced for a decade. The overall design is actually very simple, clean (in the true sense of the word) and fuss free.

I think from the side they are very similar, but its the headlights and taillights that make the first gen seem too boy-ricer and the second gen as a more grow up car

I actually feel like the lights are the worst part of the new models. They make the car blend in too much with other cars while the 1st gen had a more unique look. If anything,I think that the more aggressive look of the first gen made them look like they were faster than they actually are,which occasionally draws the wrong attention.

Especially Subaru seems to always be on about chassis rigidity improvement. Working backward from press releases, the first gen Impreza chassis stiffness would require it be made of thatched straw and pine tar.

It is immediately apparent when you drive the 2022. I have only experienced this level of body stiffness (feel wise) in a Porsche.
