Hm... that's all depends on lip/splitter. Some lip will allow it or you can just install it under the lip. If you have legit splitter/diffuser, you don't think this. That should work as guard and downforce.

I have the Aozora/Series.Blue that comes with the STI front lip. I think you're right, in that the lip will take the damage, and those guards won't do much lol

Last winter I used black electrical tape over the bottom half of my bumper. Worked like a charm so I'm gonna do it again this year.

I spent last winter ice racing, and hooning around in every snowfall in Chicago, including slamming into all manner of giant chunks of half-frozen snow on the roads, and my STi lip remained intact. It's more robust than you'd think, though I'm sure if I hit it just right it'll snap in half.
