winter driving question
 

i have no problems driving the brz in the winter as far as the dynamics itself. i have good winter tires, and i have driven all my life in the snow.

my issue however is the low clearance of this car. if the roads are not paved, and we are just driving in the ruts in the snow, then the front bumper would act as a snow plow and likely get all scraped up. for this reason, my BRZ has just been a garage queen these past two winters.

however, my winter beater is getting long in the tooth, and if it dies on me, i will have to drive the BRZ in the winter. if that happens, is there any kind of protector that can be put on the front bumper to protect against ice scrapes?

Interested, too. I WILL be driving mine year-round, and we frequently win the "snow bowl" where I live. I've shoveled feet out of my driveway, not inches, and I live on a back road that isn't exactly the first one plowed.

Maybe a plate steel replacement bumper for winter, made by BOSS or Fisher? <grin>

LOL, T.. I was gonna photoshop up that myself when I wrote the last post, but figured you'd probably eventually do my work for me... I just didn't think you'd be so bloody fast at it! Thanks... :)

In reality I managed to go all winter last year without a scratch until about a week before the last snowfall. Turning into a parking spot and grazed a big chunk of wheel well ice frozen to the ground but hidden by fresh snow. Cleaned the paint right off the corner of my bumper. Still like that because it is low enough to barely notice and hey it is a DD not a garage queen.
Oh, and since I am lowered almost 2 inches and drove 14 hours a week I have probably plowed more snow that the city.

My bumper and skid plate take a pounding all winter. I'm not really worried about the bumper paint since it's all pitted to hell because of rocks from construction anyway.

Knock on wood, I have yet to get hung up or stuck on anything.

Remember, keep your momentum and you will be fine.

Curious. Does london get as much snow as out east in NB? We'll often have 12-16 inches of snow on the actual road, with only tire ruts to stay between...

Yes we do, just maybe not so often. We are smack in the center of all the Great Lakes so no matter which way a storm comes we get it. There were many days I was blasting through 14 inches or more snow. The plumes out the sides were spectacular.

On my old car I had a fiberglass splitter with an aluminum skid plate on it.

One winter I caught it on an ice chunk stuck to the ground right in front of our college house. Yanked it right under the car!

Had to park in the middle of the street and run in the house to get tools to unbolt it. Thankfully the splitter was only held on with 2 bolts.

Oh god those pictures make me want to cry... any winter damage / rust occur as of yet on yours? I opted to get a winter car (Hyundai Veloster) in favor of driving my new BRZ in Canadian winter.

I've driven my 86 through two Norwegian winters, starting on a third.
Not a single problem, just lots of fun in empty parking lots.
And we do get plenty of snow around here.
Tcoat's photos looks like the first day or two of winter.
Come January and my pile of snow heaved up from my driveway is blocking the bedroom windows upstairs.

They were the first real snowfall yes. By the end of winter my driveway will be about the same as you I would say.
