fwiw, I'm just like you in that I cannot stand the idea of someone else wrenching on my stuff. Many shops/people have had ample opportunity to renew my faith when I've been involved in helping others get through the process, and with limited stuff on my own cars (like alignments, for instance). I've taken delivery of an adequately serviced/repaired vehicle exactly zero times.

I know. Noone else will treat Ruby like I will. People on thus thread said I should take the dealer's offer for free oil changes, but I can't deal with the gutwrenching stress of having someone else work on her. Not to mention the incompetence of even their "expert" technician. I guess it comes from my former life as a mechanic. I've seen too much...

If it does show up on Carfax, you can actually get it taken off.

My wife got into an accident years ago that she was not at fault for. Her car was nearly totaled. Because of the fact that she was not at fault, she was able to get it removed off of the CarFax report.

I would be the most pissed person in the world if I bought a car that was almost totaled and the Carfax didn't report it. Just because it wasn't her fault does not negate the fact that the car was in a major accident and seriously damaged. That is the whole point of Carfax so that people can not hide the fact their car was damaged.

On the flip side, why I should I suffer for something that was not my fault? You're right, I would be pissed too. But are you really gonna care about the guy AFTER you? This is your car. Your money. If you plan on keeping the car forever, then by all means, leave the accident on there. If you know that you will be selling the car, and still have a lien on it, its in YOUR best interest to make sure it has the highest resell value.

This is why I don't trust Carfax reports, there are so many things that can be left off them its ridiculous.

Nope, I would not be worried about the next guy and of course everybody is worried about their own interest but a report that is supposed to show all the information on a vehicle should do exactly that. It shouldn't show just what you want it to and was meant to protect the buyer from dishonest sellers (Oh ya it is perfect never had a scratch. Just ignore those pictures of it as a mangled wreck it buffed out OK). I am actually shocked to find out that this system can be circumvented (although I should have not been so naïve I guess).

This is exactly why I will never again buy a used car ever again.

No, that's legit. You gave him your address, SSN, bank routing number, and first born child, right?

If you have a friend (or you yourself) are a decent mechanic, they will know what to look for--if the seller is being forthright, they will let you take the car to "your guy" for inspection. Any seller who refuses that should be walked away from, and quickly.

Well all he needed was $10K to get his millions back and he is going to give me half so I sent cash as he requested.

Hey, btw, your grandson got in contact with me and said he'd been kidnapped on the mean streets of Beachwood, OH, and needed you to wire me $5k USD (none of those crap loonies) to help pay off his captors. I'm a kidnapping negotiator, so this is totally legit.
