My engine chirps too (idle or not), but after driving it a few miles. However here is a clear video of the tensioner shaking its tailfeather. Not saying its an issue, just showing its action. When I can hear my engine chirp I'll record a video.

Thanks for the video !!

By any chance can you press on the tensioner pulley. Against it by hand I assume it should not be easy to do so. Obviously when the engine is off ,to see how strong that spring is .
It should be hard to do so

Thank you

I wasn't able to move it, but I really didn't put too much pressure against it.

The Foreman from the Toyota dealer just called me. He did some research and is 95% sure the noise we are hearing is the DI system, which switches modes depending on temperature and other factors.

That would make sense, since it seems we don't hear it till after the engine is driven for some time.

Wish it didn't sound like a bad bearing though.

I hooked up my cheap Bluetooth ODB2 reader to look at the pressure in the fuel rail...at idle it was above 3000 PSI, and after running a bit it dropped to 1500 PSI. I'm pretty sure shooting fuel at 3000 PSI will make noise.

I've had a Mazdaspeed 3 (with a DI 2.3l turbo motor) for just over two years now, and it makes the exact same noise. Your dealer is correct that it's the DI system.

I suspect that someone will eventually rip the HPFP off and run some testing to see if it can be upgraded. When I upgraded the HPFP in my Speed3, it smoothed the engine idle out and it made less noise under idle. More noise at WOT, but... yeah

Both excellent things to hear! Thanks!

I still suspect something is a little...off.

I can tell when the DI system switches. I've worked on other DI equipped cars and they all sound pretty much the same. They click-away, but don't chirp. If you ask me, I suspect there is something with the belt (not necessarily the tensioner). First off, It didn't make that chirp noise until a few days into ownership. Secondly this is the first Subaru-based boxer engine I've seen with a self adjusting serpentine belt tensioner. All the other ones I've worked on you turned an adjustment bolt/screw (and they'd squeal if you were a little off). Working as a dealer tech (granted, not Scion or Subaru) I can't help but wonder if there might eventually be a bulletin about this. Im not saying the guy is BS-ing, but there probably just aren't enough instances yet for it to become a "known" issue.

Its almost a clutch release bearing chirp, but the noise is un-changed when the pedal is applied.

Yeah, I mean it's good to hear that the source may have been isolated to the DI, but it doesn't change the fact that it really sounds terrible IMHO... Also, would the "upgraded HPFP" cost us any $$$? If so, I say boo... Want my new car to sound new!

Yes, an aftermarket upgraded HPFP would cost you money. I'm not aware of any companies who give away hundreds of dollars of R&D and parts costs for free.

You can also see the idler pulley moving back and forth in the vid too.

My car has the cricket noise now as well. I'm 1755 miles in. Started this evening. Just did a 850 mile trip this weekend. I will keep a eye on it.

Mine has been making these noises since day one. I also have the wonderful chattery clutch at low RPM / high-ish load. Being my first manual transmission, and my first brand new car, I am about as paranoid as they get. The chirping is almost always happening, but the chatter is difficult to pin down. I'll probably take it by the shop sometime this weekend just so they can give it a once over.

I can just see the sarcastic jabs from haters... Clockwork engine (DI sounds) that is powered by a cricket in a small hamster wheel.
