In the case you linked the guy is certainly getting screwed over since the gap occurred before he even owned the car!!!

Even if the PO had the work done by a pro shop elsewhere, scion "has no record of it", therefore a challenge to the warranty work based on maintenance record snafu. |

Thanks for all the good feedback! I didn't know about the crush ring. Must be a Subaru thing. Never had to deal with that in any other car.
Sorry to hear about some of the bad luck folks have had. I definitely feel better about buying new. Sounds like there are a lot of abused used FR-S's out there. I'm still leaning strongly towards doing my own oil changes and will keep a log w/ receipts. I might also keep old oil filters in a storage bin, since that won't take up much space. I don't want any reason for delay in resolving issues, warranty-wise, if something happens. Thanks again! |

I didn't know about it either, until I saw the oil spots in my driveway...after my local Toyo dealership did an oil change!

But, here in Northern Maryland, we do it just a bit differently. Here, I just reach back to my gun rack that is mounted just behind the front seats in my FRS, I usually choose my 30-06 and I just shoot a hole in the oil pan. I avoid the AK as it's much harder to collect the used oil. Screw using the drain plug. That's purely for Wusses. |

From Scion:
Thank you for contacting Scion. We appreciate your inquiry regarding oil change intervals for your 2015 FR-S and would be glad to assist. Our recommendation for oil changes is what is listed on the 2015 FR-S Warranty and Maintenance Guide beginning on pg. 37 linked here. In it, the recommended first oil change is to be completed at 7,500 miles or 7.5 months, whichever occurs first. Although we understand that you completed a 1,000 mile break-in period for your vehicle, we suggest adhering to the scheduled maintenance guidelines listed through the Warranty and Maintenance Guide. |

That video shows filling out a little sticker to record the last time the oil was changed. I use Trip A on the dash to do this, and Trip B for fuel.
By the way, shooting a hole in an oil pan is just crazy. Instead, you need to shoot it twice so that the air can escape more easily. Also, a 50 BMG will make a bigger hole, which saves valuable time. |
