Actually, it's generally accepted that there are a few different types of mid engine layout.

a more relevant way of classifying cars would be engine placement relative to the driver. quite frankly, anyone who thinks these "front mid engine" cars drive ANYTHING like a true mid engine car is delusional.

i do not accept that there is more than one way to position an engine to make a car mid engine. people used to generally accept that the earth was flat...

Please see, Lexus LFA, Ferrari 599 GTO.

It only differs because of the weight distribution, and that could be changed by the car maker for the desirable result if so inclined.

i'd be willing to bet money that those drive more akin to FR cars than to MR cars. seriously people, cut the crap.

You know, I've never driven LFA or 599 GTO (btw 599 GTO looks so awesome!), but I have driven a track only highly tuned Rx-7 and they dropped the engine lower w more towards the center and it didn't feels like Mid engine cars... but I think they're whole purpose of making it FR car into FMR isn't about making it close to MR. Just making the heavy stuff on the mid and have better corner speed than FR.

There's more to handling behavior than weight distribution... FMR''s still have the engine, a pretty nice mass, in front of the driver. It'll feel especially light-nosed and responsive, versus something like my WRX where you can feel the engine swinging around way in the front of the car.

But the mass is still away rom the center and in front of the driver. A traditional mid-engined car has minimum rotational inertia because the weight is all there as close to the middle as possible, and concentrated right there rather thab having driveshaft and rear end, or even a rear transaxle like corvette etc. that, while evenly distrubuting weight, fails to concentrate it.

Sorry for typos, I'm on phone - computer in shop :/
