The "3 seconds or pressed 3 times" things applies to after you've released the button when starting. If you start your car and continue to hold the button, it most likely will not shut off. Also, it didn't always shut off after the button had been pressed for more than 3 seconds. The service tech also specifically tested this theory by holding the button down for an extended amount of time after a successful start.

I think you are inadvertently turning the car off too because with a stall the dash lights and deck shouldn't turn off!

Whatever you are doing, just press in clutch and push button once to start the car. The engine will crank for 10 seconds or whenever it fires, whichever is first.

No need to hold the button down.
