I see why 2fast4you is saying he's not African American; Black can be a mix of many ethnic backgrounds outside of African. Some of my friends identify themselves as Black; when I asked about their heritage I remember some responded as part Jamaican or Creole or American Indian or Latino and almost always White (around 90% of Black/African Americans have white in their lineage IIRC). That's why when you compare a Black person to an African native, you will notice that their physical traits (beyond skin color) are not that similar. I probably haven't kept up w/ the politics/times but is there now a difference between African American and Black? Is one a subset of another?

I'm Filipino but most of my friends recently are other types of Asians. So the way I identify myself slowly switched from the subset to the superset: from Filipino American to Asian American.

I know a pornstar who grew up around my area... her dad is Black (who has some White) and mom is Filipino. When I talk to her she doesn't talk like my Filipino American friends. She prefers the Filipino dishes her mom makes but she identifies herself as Black through and through.

I don't normally comment on this kind of thing but, AFAIK I don't have any white (who knows I might don't really give a damn lol) in my lineage but I do have some native American. I prefer to be called Black because blacks and Africans (raised in africa) have a different life style. Some Africans even have some sort of spitefulness at Blacks/African Americans. The friends I do have that are African are great friends but I have met some that are a little belittling. I wouldn't say there is a difference in African American and Black. I am fine being called African American because after all I am of african descent. Hell, we should simply be called americans after all...well I'll end it there.

I'm Chinese.

Moved to Toronto, Canada when I was 7, so I only know how to read but don't know how to write. I can speak Cantonese, English and very little Mandarin. Wished I learn French and Japanese.

Still living in Toronto.

Multi-generational English Canadian, from North-Central BC. Norman if you go back far enough... So, uh, English, French (5 years ago I could claim perfect fluency, not so much these days), chotto nihongo hanasemasu, and a mix of Punjabi bad words (T&A related, soni boon) from my buddy and baby words (dudu, topi) from his kids.

Work with many Chinese co-workers, but haven't picked up much Cantonese (majority here) or Mandarin, yet...

I'm black but I'm the whitest black guy you'll ever meet. Born and raised in NY then moved to south FL. Going to move again by the end of the year to Jacksonville then who knows where. Currently in the AF reserve but my girlfriend is active Navy so I'll probably be moving a lot.

i wish we could all just be american's already but some people that say similar things want me to stop using my native tongue completely, stop using chop sticks and eat burgers and hot dogs all the time. i'm 100% american and shouldn't have to deny my ethnic heritage to be able to say that.

Wait but you live in Cali, aren't Asians the majority? :P
jk I used to live in San Mateo, where there were less Asian people and I got the squinty eyes, you must eat Panda Express everyday stuff.
