I do not see why the TRD exhaust can't produce more HP. I plane to doing a dyno run when i will get it. We will see.
I'd like to see a TRD exhaust dyno too!

Just installed a used TRD catback on my BRZ.

Firsr thing I did was check the midpipe diameters. The stock midpipe has some pressed in kinks in the design that hinder flow. The TRD does not, HOWEVER I was really surprised to see that the diameter is at most 2.25" and goes down to 2" between the resonator and front pipe...

The muffler itself is quite good, but imo a custom or modified midpipe to increase the piping diameter would help out performance of tgis exhaust quite a bit, the flange sizes will easily allow for larger piping.

I'm now 3 days with the TRD exhaust and TRD intake. The exhaust was a bit louder than I expected and I thought I might not like it at first. But after a couple of days I'm getting to like it more and more and don't think I'll ever go back to stock. The exhaust kind of reminds me of my old WRX, but a tad louder when starting or coasting at around 3k RPM.

I ended up going with the TRD exhaust and intake for a few reasons (I also had the dealership install it, bring the hate/flames).
* I really wanted something I knew, or believed, would last for 100k+ with no issues
* I'm not going to tune or add a turbo or anything else to the engine in the future
* I wanted something that looks stock and came from the factory
* I wanted to keep the warranty in tact
* I really liked the looks of the D tailpipes (TRD intake looks good too imo)
* From all the videos I saw on YouTube, the TRD exhaust sounded the best, and most tolerable for a long drive

I certainly wish the install would have been cheaper, but that was the tradeoff for having the peace and mind of keeping the warranty. This is my only car and rely on it to commute to work, if this was a weekend car I would have gone a completely different route. I also plan on keeping this as my daily driver for many many years.

In closing, I'd say if you have the spare money and value the warranty and such, go for it. I should note, I gave this to myself as an early Christmas gift.

I recently switched to a TRD cat-back, and I was not impressed.
You're correct, from the flange to the resonator is in fact 2" O.D. pipe, but that is not the worst part...the flange fits INSIDE that little 2" pipe, making it even smaller. My calipers wouldn't go that deep into the pipe to measure, but the I.D. where the exhaust stream enters the TRD cat-back is no more than 1 3/4"!!
From the resonator to the Muffler, the pipe is 2 1/4", swelled up to 2 1/2" at the flange on the muffler. The I.D. of the inlet on the muffler is 2 3/8", so 2 1/2" O.D. pipe.

I had the same thought as you about larger piping. I searched out a shop that uses stainless and does in-house mandrel bends, and they fixed me up. I went with 2 1/2 from the front pipe to the muffler with a large (4" X 18") Magnaflow resonator. It feels and sounds much better.

Ya I'm going to do that down the road for sure. Maybe even go with 2.5" but I want a good resonator in there. Deleting the resonator would surely make this a rather loud exhaust setup.

The drone would be unbearable with larger piping and no resonator. Here is the one I used...

Hey I'm curious if you still have the stock exhaust and if so, could you please make the same measurements on it?

I just want to know if there's any point on the TRD exhaust that is SMALLER inside diameter than the stock exhaust. I would hope that the TRD exhaust is at least the same size or bigger at all points in the exhaust path... otherwise that would be kinda messed up.

I get that the TRD exhaust has tiny pipes and zero gains so therefore is a bad exhaust compared to other aftermarket options out there, but for me the looks and sound is perfect and I'm willing to pay the for the overpriced cosmetics-and-sound-only TRD exhaust... but not if it's actually MORE restrictive than stock, that would just be lame.

I don't think it is worth it. Get a berk track pipe w/ tip for $130 or a WORKS AB muffler delete for $300 instead

And also mind you of the Warranty that you all got from the Dealer; If like me sure don't want to void that. But get what you want along with it. Dollar smart I call it.
And as stated it sounds good and looks good

Idk if its more restrictive than the stock midpipe, the stock one has a lot of bends and kinks. But it is only 2" diameter in one section which is restrictive of course, and also easily fixable...

I still have the stock stuff. I'll need some daylight to take the measurements ( I did it last year and posted up, but the thread would probably take forever to find now). I can say that the TRD mid-pipe is considerably smaller than stock...as soon as I pulled it out of the box, I was like WTF? Pretty lame.

I agree with you on the looks (a lot of people don't like the D shaped tips, but I think they suit the cut-outs perfectly), and the basic sound, but found it a little tinny, plus it had some drone at the wrong RPM/load (55-60MPH, top gear, light throttle). The larger piping and resonator deepened the sound a bit, and just about killed the drone. The TRD muffler itself is a pretty stout piece, and I like it.

I have some before pics of the TRD, as well as some comparison pics with the Magnaflow and I've been thinking about a write-up of sorts...maybe this weekend, I'll drag the stock system out of the shed and get a side by side shot, as well as some of the TRD as it is now.

Your question relies on the subjective opinion of someone who has heard the TRD and others that sound similar.

I have the Magnaflow which you can buy from JRP here in Canada. It has a nice deep sound at low RPMs like the factory should have sounded and the deep part tapers off above ~3000 revs so there's no drone. The tips are double walled and look top quality.
Exactly my experience with the magnaflow.

Sounded even better when I added the TRD intake.
