I think about all the abuse the Torsens I have had can take, it just blows my mind that it could be expected that the minimal use Sam's had is considered abuse. This on the car they let journalists drift their brains out on?

Understood. And I'm neither fighting against the OP's dilemma, nor for it. Just trying to keep neutral within this matter.

It's just a topic that can be sensitive when it comes strictly to dealing with the manufacturer.

I've had similar arguments from my past experience... It can get frustrating, as we know.

I swear it's just a power trip with certain individuals. I doubt it's a Toyota policy as Toyota will typically bend even after the warranty is over. I had a yoke, driveshaft, seal issue that I noticed leaking about 6K miles after my warranty expired. There was a service bulletin and I just said, look I bring my truck to you to service because I don't have time to do it myself or through my company and I truly feel you should have spotted that and taken care of it. I got $1700 in parts covered by Toyota and just had to pay a couple hundred for labor. I'm just way to busy to fight over $200 so it was all I needed to be happy.

It's sad but I think in many cases a service rep or service writer is going to have a chip on their shoulder and will either make your life difficult or they act like they are doing you some big favor. What they don't realize is if they just say I'm sorry this happened to your new car but don't worry we'll work with Scion to get this covered. It's not like they made the car and you're insulting them. LOL! You then are like these guys are great, change my oil, send your friends to the dealer, etc.

I don't like the dealer I got my Scion from but I just had no choice as my dealer who I've purchased 5 cars from just couldn't get me one when I needed it.

When it comes to dealerships and warranty repairs, I always follow the "Don't tell them unless they ask" mentality.

I find it pretty word that the diff would have problems under so little stress.

Isn't the same rear end used in the IS series cars (which are meant to be pretty reliable)?

At any rate yeah, looks like fluids are a must for the 'fast' crowd.

I've had these issues with a stone stock car. I hate to know what it's gonna act like if I throw some suspension mods at it. I guess I'm going to get mine checked out Thursday when I get my oil changed...hopefully they'll let me watch!

I am not sure which differential Subaru was using at the time, but I do know that when they first started to promote this car they entered a race version into a fairly competitive field of cars, and qualified in 8th. They managed to hold this place for most of the race but eventually had to retire due to a differential failure.

Again, I am not sure if they were using the same differential that they are supplying on their customer cars or not, but this may be something that people will want to consider when it comes time to upgrade.

Generally speaking if the desire is to race competitively then a plate type LSD rather than a torque-sensing differential is, again generally, advised.

I know that there are several out there to chose from, but this will in all probability certainly cause some issues if detected, with warranties.

I think the rear diff is the same as the IS350 which lends me to believe it's very robust. The IS350 makes how much HP/Tq again? (rhetorical).

Also when I did my first oil change at 1200 miles I also changed my Transmission fluid and I changed my rear diff lube to Amsoil 75w-110.

My car is completely unmodified but I've done burnouts, donuts and I have my car on the race track while instructing totaling roughly 90 minutes of driving flat out.

I think it's safe to say the OP had a faulty DIFF.

Well...I finally took mine to the dealer. They couldn't replicate the clunking noise for 2 days and said they had driven it all over the place and on interstate and around town( I bet they had). So I go up there and I back out of the parking spot and go to take off and it does it! Long story short...they changed my rearend fluid. The mechanic said toyota told him to put in 75/90 gear oil and a friction modifier.

So far the diff seems much smoother, but I wonder how this is going to affect the lockup of the diff?

The mechanic also said there were no particles of metal or anything in the fluid. Kinda strange but I'm glad it wasn't down for a month.

I know. That is what corporate Toyota told him to do to remedy the problem. I don't know if it's the new fluid or the FM that smoothed it out, but it really does seem better. I'll have to drive it more aggressively to see how it truly affected it.

Changing the fluid in our diff to Motul Gear300LS was one of the first things we did before our first track day with the car.

I've seen more than a few diffs eventually give out due to sheared and/or cooked fluid.. the thing gets HOT when you're stressing it!
