Here we go with warranty crap...
And the runaround begins.
My car has 4600 miles on it. I've been smelling gear lube when hot (8-10+ mile) and getting some pretty bad road noise (though most of that I think is the Hankook's). But when turning the diff is definitely not happy either. I dropped it at the dealer before I left for Solo Nationals. They dropped the fluid and it is "burnt". They don't know anything about the car, but they are ordering a whole new differential. But I was warned that if it happens again it won't be covered. Why? Because I have a Stranoparts.com sticker on the back window and the car is "modified" (KW's and the wheels and tires). Beware of idiot field reps, and in that vain... I'm pulling any footage of my car off my website, I don't need the hassle. |
Damn man, looks like the stock diff and fluid are not up to the task. You may want to change your diff fluid, i changed mine to veruspeed and no problems so far.
|
A new diff for burnt fluid? LOL
|
I wonder about mine. Mine has done 7 20 minutes sessions on track plus a lot of autocross
|
Yeah, that's my concern... Most miles are street, I did one day in the 60's and one in the mid 80's. And autocrossed it twice, that's it.

the fluid that came out of the diff was very dino smelling, and unusually red, like it was mixed in with ATF almost a dino synth mix? I have never seen a GL5 that pink looking.
I promptly refilled my diff with wesson corn oil colored Motul 300v 75w-90 and can say its quieter. I may even say that it feels like there is less drag but I assure you that is only in my head. its a gl4/gl5 that has no FM and lots of EP added I have a feeling someone cheaped out on fluids in accounting, I've dropped shell and castrol from factory rear ends, this stuff is a weird fluid. |
I've got a bottle of Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear lubricant LS in my garage. Do you guys think its good for our diff? It meets API GL-5. Thanks.
|
Apparently they haven't seen their own commercials, or attended any of their on-track press days.
|
Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like a synthetic fluid change is a top priority!
I wonder what they will say when I bring mine in for the extended cranking CEL reflash. LOL! "Sir your car is modified," dealer. Me, "What are you insinuating, this is my fault? There's a TSB on this problem. The crank sensor, engine, CEL, and EMS is stock, so flash the ecu, send me on my way and if there is another TSB you're really inconveniencing me, I'm a busy person and I don't like wasting my time here at the dealer taking care of problems with my new car." LOL! |
Change your dealer. In no way having custom wheels/suspension voids the diff warranty.

Welcome to dealing with Toyota/Scion. Sounds about on par with my past experiences when I owned Toyotas. it's not just individual dealerships, I've dealt with at least 5 different ones in the SE Michigan area and they are all ignorant, unfriendly, and useless. I will never, ever, EVER own a toyota/scion again because their customer service and ownership experience is piss fu$%ing poor. Good luck Sam, sorry to hear about the troubles.
I've never had an issue dealing with Subaru. |
Sorry to hear that Sam. Now I'm thinking I need to swap the diff fluid this weekend.
|
Have not heard that before about Toyota. Heard nothing about horror stories about Subaru. Mainly about Sti's but still.

Would you get better service in Richmond - not like you want to go that far.
