I have traction control off, but then again I dont do anything crazy things in my car and anyways paying attention. It also helps to that I drive for a living. I have had the traction control and I can tell the different and it feels like the car is controling you more than you controlling the car.

I am coming from FWD to RWD so I do find this thread useful. Plus, I'm concerned about skidding because I've had a couple of issues with it before, but only a few. Every time I've initiated a skid in my FWD car, I've tapped the brakes on accident and spun around, never wrecked, got incredibly lucky. I also spun my brother's 240SX out once taking off too fast from a stop sign after it had just started raining. I'm going to be so cautious driving this car haha. I'll definitely spend a lot of time in parking lots.

Can's agree with you there. You can drive like an absolute asshat in a FWD car (understeer and torque steer is fairly easy to handle) and get away with it all the time...not so much with RWD cars...

There are plenty of schools in the US that do that. They are not the same schools that one goes to in preparation for a driving exam to get their license.

No amount of forum advice can replace in-car training.
There's a great, and inexpensive, one-day program happening around the country geared toward young drivers; it is called Street Survival. More info at www.StreetSurvival.org. If that's not convenient, then find your local SCCA, PCA, BMWCCA, Audi Club NA group and ask about upcoming "car control clinics." |

As much as everybody here is just trying to give good advice, newcomers to RWD (including myself) don't need to worry too much. It's not like RWD is some untamable beast that requires extreme caution -- just a sensible dose. (Always reminds me of the Top Gear episode with Jeremy in the super AMG trying to keep it straight
).Basically, let yourself relearn the limits from FWD. The FRS/BRZ's traction control makes it very forgiving and correcting. Driving responsibly, even in adverse conditions like rain, is not very difficult in this car. Hell, I feel like it loses traction LESS than my Si did. Somewhat unrelated: It's ridiculously easy to chirp tires, even accidentally. Half the time I'm like.. really?

"exploring limits" with the controls on, on the public road, is a waste of time. You won't learn anything except to be a thug with the controls. Go to a race or rally school, learn RWD techniques in the school cars, then get some tuition by the same experts in your own car.
Any other approach will be a disaster, though on the plus side you might end up with plenty of views on YouTube! |
