Snow Driving

My BRZ is not great in the snow, its so light.



But my Suzuki Samurai is lighter and I hardly ever put it in 4 wheel. Its quite different with big tires and not much air in em', as they are supposed to be. 20 lbs is the law with a Sammy.

Oh, nothing to do with not 'frolicking' in the snow. I'm at my happiest slipping and sliding. I was referring to vision. More than 10 cm of snow, you will not be able to see going down the hwy at 50+ mph. At somewhat less than 10cm my BRZ is plowing snow...some goes to the side...too much comes up and makes seeing ahead difficult.


A little more the 10cm and and some freezing rain and it can break your plastic nose....guess how I know...$1200

I generally go 55-65 in that kind of snow? Just now if they forecast over 10cm I park the BRZ and take the truck. I slow down for ice and slush, but rarely for snow.

i just looked it up and the only blizzak tire rack has thats severe weather (which is was wrong and isnt m+s) is the lm32

I think he meant 80+ kph in 3.93 inches ~ snow. But really, that's... oh... close to bottoming out in these cars...

These are highly under-rated fun-buggies! I rented one while on vacation in St Thomas (took a boat to St John where we drove it). Sure, the seat belts looked burned out and rusted over, but these things climbed 45° inclines with spirit. If you can get past their ugly styling, these are an absolute hoot to play in.

Snow tires tend to benefit from a tall sidewall though (think potholes when the snow melts). Low profile winter tires are a thing? I guess money CAN buy anything.

There is definitely a compromise on both sides. Hence why I put the quotes. It's like an SUV, a little bit of everything, not particularly good at anything.

10cm is just not much snow to slow down for? Guess it depends on what you are used to and/or prepared for. I've seen youtube videos where they get some snow in a southern state and the interstate becomes blocked over 2cm.



IMO though, 10cm is the limit for the BRZ. Anything over that and the nose starts to plow snow.

Maybe i just have bad winter tires cuz around 5-6 cm my brz would get stuck lol

I am lower by 1 1/2 inches and blow through more than 10cm (4in) on a regular basis. I have snowplowed as much as 35cm (14in) on several occasions without issue. The depth of the snow is almost meaningless compared to the type of snow. The wet heavy stuff at just below or slightly above the freezing mark causes more problems with even as little as 5cm than the deep, fluffy, extreme cold type that builds up.
Is it just fluffy stuff with bare road underneath? Is it an ice layer covered in moderately heavy wet snow? Is it 5 inches of slush sitting just at freezing? There is no set depth that is safe to drive fast or slow in. It all depends upon the bigger picture.


These whole discussions are hilarious to me anyway. There is no magic to drive these or any other RWD car in the snow no matter how much clearance, weight, balance, or other factors people like to throw around. Yes if using proper tires AWD is "best" and FWD is "better" for getting started but once moving everybody has the same conditions to drive and brake in and they need to regulate their speed and inputs as much as the RWD driver.
