Hmmm. I'm going to get my 4Runner serviced this coming Monday at the dealer. Hope they have an 86 in the showroom I can try closing the trunk. The latch on my 86 does not catch unless I slam it down pretty forcefully, so I thought all 86/BRZ were the same. Thanks for letting me know.

I figure your latch just needs some adjustment. It used to be a simple process, loosen a couple of bolts, wiggle the latch, retighten the bolts. However, today, it probable requires a computer, a shop manual, a special tool and a torque wrench calibrated down to .00001 inch pounds.

Bubba says just to take a small crowbar or a very large screwdriver, stick in in there and pry on that latching rod/bar till it moves up a tad -

i've also clutchless shifted, and the effect is the same. clutch-in, or moving the stick to neutral will both cancel the gear indicator display. the gear indicator doesn't show anything until a few seconds after you've realized it was the wrong gear.
