ahhhhh!!! I need to go to the failure list now. 1800 miles after the recall, and my car blew up today. Had smoke puffing from the right side under the hood. Stopped immediately.. temp normal, no CEL... but oil trailing behind the car and all over the right side under the pan. Oil pump? Anyway, I got towed and currently driving a Sienna loaner. UGH.

I am at about 3,000 miles post-recall with about 5-6 hours of track driving. I think I am in the clear. I had the work done at Rohrich Toyota in Pittsburgh. I don't know if I would get this recall work done, now knowing about the failures, but if I did, I would certainly go back there again.

They charged me about $155 for a throw out bearing and four plugs, charging 1/2 hour for labor, which I was very happy with as well.

Vehicle Mileage: 82,750
Vehicle Make: Subaru
Miles After Recall Performed: 2,000 miles, one 400 mile road trip, 2 AutoX events.
Other work completed with recall: High pressure fuel pump (TSB)
Dealership: Joseph Subaru, Florence, KY

I realize I'm not necessarily out of the woods, as some failures have occurred later than 2k miles, but I think I'm far enough along to be able to post a success story. Knowing what I know now, I likely would not have taken the car in to do the recall, but am very grateful to Joseph Subaru for taking care in the rebuild.

I'm new to this forum and not sure where to post this. Have there been any updates late march/early april from the Center for Auto Safety or Toyota?

I have a '13 FR-S with only 15,000 miles on it. I'm debating on whether or not to take it in. I don't live in the same state as where the car is parked, and I only drive it infrequently. Where can I go to make the most informed decision?

Everything is stock. Not really a car guy.

1000 miles hit today. About 33k on the clock total. The only issue was a cracked Borla header, since swapped out, and honestly not the dealer's fault. No oil leaks. Car pulls as strong as an FR-S with stock parts can.

Wanted to wait until I made it over 3k miles so I didn't jinx myself. I got the service done in February (before they revised the procedure). Car has been fine since. I got it done at Koons Toyota in Tyson's Corner (Virginia). They were working on a car before mine, so I know I wasn't the first car they fixed.

Bust out the champagne. I'd say you're in the clear.

The car thankfully seems to be fine after Toyota of Kirkland completed the work. It had an exhaust rattle before taking it in and as a bonus that was fixed too!

They charged me about $155 for a throw out bearing and four plugs, charging 1/2 hour for labor, which I was very happy with as well.

I want to append this a little bit: After about 50 miles following the recall, I drained the oil (taking the quick-drain plug out to allow for a larger opening) and ran it through a filter and it looked clean. I was looking for packing material primarily.

After about 3,000 miles (including 2-day HPDE and 2-Day Time Trial), I changed the oil. During this oil change I found enough small metal shavings and particles to be concerned - they were mostly very small, and not a great deal, but enough to be concerned that my engine was machining itself to death. I cut open the filter, and found shavings in it as well. Some silver metallic, some gold/bronze non-metallic. I started using 5W-30 weight Mobil 1 oil instead of 0W-20 Mobil 1.

I then dropped the oil pan but it looked pretty good. No new packing material in the oil pickup tube.

I then replaced and cut open the filter after about 300 miles and it was completely clean. (At some point I just decided to drive it, with the plan that if the engine destroyed itself I would put another one in it.)

I then replaced the oil, and cut open the filter after about 1,200 more miles (including a TNiA and one day Time Trial) and it was again completely clean of metal.

I don't know where the metal came from, but it tentatively looks like I am in the clear. I am driving it/tracking it with confidence at this point.

I mention this because if I had to do it over again, I would have drained the oil at 500 or 1,000 miles with the hope that I would have picked up evidence of metal shavings, and would have changed the oil more often thereafter looking for evidence of an issue.

And actually, if I had to do it over again, I wouldn't do it.
