Use defensive driving unless you're in arizona. Here, take a look over your shoulder, and while you're moving your head, if it seems that it could be clear, start turning your car. That way, it'll prevent some asshole from coming up speeding up behind you and take that sweet spot.

Regardless of how well I adjust my mirrors I do a quick shoulder check, since we tend to have some VERY dumb motorcyclists who don't know not to stay in people's blind spots around here.

Feel for ya, OP. Also old and stiff, but around here you HAVE to head-check for morons on two wheels and two legs. I do more of a lean forward torso twist, if that helps at all.
