Without knowing your back story (and that it is real) it does just come off as tall tails.
My Dad is actually finishing a book that goes into all this stuff in detail that's supposed to be on sale later in the year. He posts a load of "behind the scenes" pics and stuff on instagram that covers stuff from the original movies.

I laugh at the amount of misinformation that spread across the internet about these movies, much like all of the myths about importing gray market vehicles. If I had a dollar for every time I was told how to import an R34 here today, I'd probably have enough to buy one of the original Motorex cars lol

They specifically wanted the car in the scene to quickly pop the top off while driving down the highway. Traditional convertible wouldn't have worked for what they were going for.

Even with that aside, the MKIV made a better hero car than a 3000GT would have any day.

YA about 100 of them for one model year.
It was the 3000GT that got me interested in Japanese cars back in 90. Of course it was well out of my price range back then but did lead to my buying the 91 Talon TSI AWD which gradually evolved to me being here now.

Great choice, my roommate in college has a 1G Eclipse and that made me fall in love with DSMs. Really wanted a Plymouth Laser Turbo, lightest model they made (crank windows even lol).

Long story short: My dad was tech advisor for the first 2 movies and gathered the cars for the Tokyo Drift. He was the owner of the orange supra & blue maxima in the first movie, along with the silver skyline in the second.

He was approached at a car show by some people who handed him a script for a movie (was then called "Redline") He went through it, and then they started making changes here and there and started production. The 3000GT was ditched because there were better tuner cars on the market, cars that people considered to be more prestigious than others, and because certain scenes would not work with the 3000GT. The scene where Paul Walker jumps out of the Supra onto the Semi truck required a vehicle with a targa top- something that the 3000GT didn't offer.

My Dad had a Supra at the time, took Rob Cohen for a ride in it and, after consideration, they ultimately decided they were going to use that vehicle for the movie. An RB-swapped 240sx was never in contention to be the hero car lol

There was a similar scenario with 2F2F. The hero car was supposed to be a couple of compact Dodge tuner cars (take a guess) but they turned down the proposal from Dodge and intercepted a couple Evo VIIs on their way to a rally time somewhere in Europe.
Hey I'm happy to be schooled. I'd heard forever that the Supra was chosen for performance reasons. Cool to put your last name with a certain Craig.

The RB26 swapped 240SX was from the Racer X screenplay. Redline was the short story behind Racer X if I recall.

^That is interesting. I haven't seen that before, though that differs quite a bit from the script I saw. There might have been talks about a 240sx during the inital phase, but from what I know, at the time my Dad got involved, they wanted a 3000GT, which was then changed to a Supra.

It is a movie. Real life performance abilities mean nothing.
