I posted that just before shutting down and leaving work. All the way home I beat myself up hoping to delete it before anyone noticed. Oh well. I'm an asshole.

It's a building. People fuck up. Nothing lasts forever. It's a damn shame but on the up side, no one died.

That is just it though. The stonework looks light and spindly but that is distance and optical illusion. The stone work even in the domes weight thousands of tons. Much of this weight was balanced or braced by all the wood. To much wood burns and the whole thing comes down. It would just take one arch to give way and all that cantilevered pressure is just going to self destruct.

Man it's awful what happened to the Notre Dame Cathedral. A magnificent historical piece. Hopefully the can restore it to the best ability.

Well, yeah. It's heavy as heck. And it doesn't look it. That's hard. That's why it's such an amazing building.

Likely the only way to guarantee if falls is to dump planes-full of water on it...

Now, it just has more interesting history. We'll see if it re-opens. It'll be decades.

I hope the big rose windows made it though. They're under the vault and may stand a chance. Can't tell from any of the stuff released so far.

Have they discovered what caused the fire yet?

It's amazing how good fire departments are at finding the cause of a fire. For example, the wild fires in California burn thousands of acres, but despite the large area they still seem to be able to pinpoint exactly where it started and its cause (cigarette, camp fire, lighting a fart, etc).

All I heard was "due to the current renovation". A worker sweating pipes or something.
