Miata Club is $29,420 MSRP
BRZ Limited is $28,490 MSRP

These cars are very close in price and probably the model most people buy for both cars. I would love to see both of these cars on the dyno at the same dyno, and on the same day. I suspect that the Skyactiv powertrain has less power loss to the wheels than the FRZ. If you look at the overall 1/4 mile time, it is pretty clear the Miata is the faster car. The Miata is lighter and faster and those are some pretty big advantages.

You guys are pretty amusing. These cars are in the same price range, period. They both start around $25k, they both have trim levels that go to around $30k, the ND has one more package on top of the Club that gives you Brembos and BBS wheels for another $3k. I don't think the Brembos made for an almost 2-second gap.

Would it be interesting to see a base or GT ND's lap times? Sure, I'd be interested in how much difference the Bilsteins and LSD make. But to call this an unfair comparison sounds pretty weak. Suck it up! The most important thing about these cars is not their lap times, it's how much they let you enjoy pushing to the limit and improving your skills.

There was a lot more information in the video than just the two numbers at the end.
That bolded part is really important.

It underlines the bs that FHI and Toyota keeps shelling out, that is their garbage special editions (I own one). Mazda puts out a special edition and the performance gets better.

So yes, these are two $30k special editions. The results speak for themselves.

Does the series blue still use the shitty tires? if so i'm not really surprised what these results say...

There was a lot more information in the video than just the two numbers at the end.

I didn't literally mean the ND was as fast as the STI, but at 33~34k you can get a base STI. See my point?

It is hard to see your point that these two are "similar trim levels" seeing as how the 30k trim for BRZ is just appearance/aero packages, whereas the ND's upper trim level is performance oriented.

Not trying to say our cars are the best at all. I talk smack about our cars all the time. It's slow as hell! no torque! But you have to also remember that the ND in this video had performance tires, whereas the BRZ was stuck with the primacy. I believe those 2 seconds gap would close with similar hardware.

So, what are the lap times for the base ND that is similar to the hardware of the BRZ? isn't that what the whole lightweight, COG, and chassis engineering is all about? Not some bullshit about this car costs 33k with all this performance package, but we will compare it to another car at ~30k with cool bodykits/blue interior?

Don't get me wrong, the ND looks fun and I'm impressed with the results. But if I had 34k to spend on a car, I wouldn't be getting the club spec ND. There's much more to be had for that. I would not have paid MSRP for the series blue either (I bought mine used for much less).

my $0.2

I agree that the Special Editions for FRS/BRZ are shit. Series blue, while being a cool looking car and I love it, is not a performance special edition. That's a damn shame

look tires alone could easily be the difference between the performance specs of the two cars. Tires can make that much and more of a difference.

But the choice is between convertible or coupe. I've got zero interest in owning a convertible because I burn in about 5 minutes. The new miata looks awesome, but no chance of me ever having one.

FRS 4 EVER!!! THE BESTEST CAR IN THE WORLD!

Jesus fucking Christ...The Miata beat the frs around the track get over it. Yes our tires suck but they are what comes on the stock FRS/BRZ...So comparing them with anything else would be even more misleading. The Miata is newer and better by a slight margin, it's not Mazda's fault the "higher" end twins outside of Japan offer absolutely zero performance improvements.

That's just the point. The BRZ tested was essentially stock (from a performance standpoint) and the Miata tested was not (not even close). Since both cars are $26k in their stock forms, why not test both that way? Probably because it would reflect negatively on the Miata.

The problem isn't so much that MT did this. The problem is that people buy into it.

Chances are (strongly) that the stock Miata which matches the stock BRZ in price is not "better by a slight margin", but actually slower by a slight margin. No objective person is going to buy the argument that adding mods like an LSD, uprated wheels, tires, aero, Bilstein shocks, a Brembo BBK don't make the Miata lap faster, handle and feel better. If a faster lap time is what some are using to determine "better" then they're being deceived, and maybe willfully so.

Motor Trend tests whatever was sent to them. Seriously, you are making this into some sort of conspiracy theory. It is what it is.

Oh, and the Club Spec Miata that is about $1K more than the BRZ Limited does come with Billsteins and an LSD. The BBS wheels and Brembos are the additional upgrade. Saying a $29K MSRP car is close to an STI is a real stretch here people. Many STI's are pushing close to $40K with options and some over that.

Motor Trend is a large enough publication where they don't have to test whatever is sent to them. I've seen them source specific vehicles for tests on many occasions.

Because the Motor Trend guys know people that are serious about the track are gonna at least buy the Club Spec edition that is not even $1K more than a BRZ Limited which is a very comparably spec'd car. When does Motor Trend ever test base model anything? They take whatever is in the press fleet and the press fleet cars tend to have all the options because most people buying cars what to read reviews where cars have the options, not a base model.

IMHO, some of you guys are taking this way too personal. There were some excellent points made about both cars in the video. Pros and cons. The end result was ridiculously close so getting upset about trim levels seems pointless.
