I myself was originally hoping it would be the next celica, but honestly opinions stated before are probably right. People would automatically assume it's a slow Eco box and sales wouldn't be as high. And we need sales to be high if we want Toyota to make sports cars in the future.

I think FR-S(MR-S naming convention) or FT-86 would be the best names. Maybe even GT-86.

What would be awesome is if they released this car as the celica then released the ft-hs as the Supra.
The "negative" stigma on the Celica name is grossly overstated. It's been proven many times over a new product that is actually good can overcome a bad stigma, and the Celica doesn't even have a bad stigma!

Look at the Ford Explorer or Taurus. Known for decades as big piles of garbage or death traps with Firestone tires...now look at them. Ford made a good product and kept the names and both are hits for them. Toyota could easily do it with any one of their old nameplates, and whether most on here like it or not, Celica is the one that fits this car the best.

just call it 'Hachi-Roku'(eight-six) and be done with it.......

Hahaha i love when people say Celica is best fitted for this car, or it has to be corolla, or has to be this has to be that...

Toyota said at the start, in the middle and still to this day that the Corolla AE-86 levin trueno sprinter is what this car is based on therefore its the predecessor of it. The AE-86...

And they have reserved the rights or wateva to the 86 logo..

Alot of others (non-Toyota spokespeople) i.e the editors/car writers/reviewers etc etc have mentioned it as the new Celica....

Is that a fair statement???

No, they said it was the car that inspired it. FYI, the IS300 (the Altezza) also was a spiritual successor.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

"I drive a RWD Corolla GT-S"
"Sweet! Wait, what year?"
"85"
"Oh, so it isn't the AEeighty-six?"

The AE86 wasn't carted around when the Altezza was shown at car shows. Toyota might've harked a small comment on "oh, AE86 successor", but it was probably just to throw up hype for the damned thing.

A 4 door a successor to the Sprinter Trueno / Levin line of cars? Ya.....right.

The difference between the Altezza and the FT-86? The FT-86 is actually a real successor.

Just sayin....

Cool

This car has no relationship with Corolla so why call it Corolla.
It just inspire by the drift car in Initial-d manga.
If Celica isn't good enough, how about call it Supra.
So when someone ask us,
"What car you guy drive?"
"I drive Toyota Supra!"

weowww! It's cool.:happy0180::happy0180::happy0180:

That's hilarious!

That reminds me of an incident when I rolled the Duc up to a gas station and a guy started shooting the shit about bikes. He then says, "that's a really nice 'one-thousand-ninety-eight". I kept trying to correct him by saying 10-9-8 but it was a lost cause.
