I'm not trying to define what a sports car is, I guess my question is, what difference does it make if the ae86 isn't considered a sports car? It doesn't take away from the similarities that the 2 cars have in common. And the gt86 being a sports car doesn't imply that it has better than average performance. In my opinion the 2 cars have more things in common with each other compared to their differences.

I think used pricing it about right for a current production car.
Usually it isn't until the production ends on a model and people start figuring out what the cars are, that prices go up. Even then it's no guarantee.

At risk of opening Pandora's Box I will say for the pure sake of classification the new 86 is not a "sports car" either. Both the AE and the new are 2+2 coupes. The AE 86 body style was totally in line with the "sports cars" of the era the same as the new is inline with today's.

Ive had this conversation with Extrashaky before and I'm pretty sure his argument was that the corolla GTS is more akin to a hot hatch (souped up economy car) vs the 86 which was built from the ground up (so to speak). I get that point, but like I said it doesn't really change the specs of the car.

That point is most certainly valid.

All the similarities you have drawn are generic. Okay, so they both have four wheels. Big deal.

You're going to focus in on the RWD layout again. RWD was nothing unusual back then. Toyota was pushing the "safety" of FWD but kept the Corolla RWD to appeal to the large chunk of the American market who hated FWD vehicles. The 1984 MR2 was also RWD and was an actual sports car. Our cars have more in common with that vehicle than a dumpy econobox.

I don't know why people put more value into the category we give something rather than what the thing actually is. It's not the fault of the platypus for not fitting into our naming system. It's a stupid system. If a car isn't a sports car but it's more fun and performance oriented than something that is a sports car, why does that matter?

Exactly. Why do people insist on trying to call the Corolla a sports car and drawing imaginary parallels with real performance vehicles? Why can't they just be happy with it being a dumpy econobox?
