HunterGreene: My butt dyno was off line. I didn't say a damn thing about it having more power. I said the car ran better. The idle stumble was less drastic, and considering ambient air temperatures have been well over 105* its clear when the car is running better. I've been tuning cars for over 20 years. I'm not some 20 year old fanboy.

Ever heard the phrase 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'?

I think you're perfectly right to complain, it's an annoying noise that is inconsistent with ownership of past vehicles, it isn't unreasonable to expect a similar level of 'quality' from a product that is supposed to be the 'latest and greatest'.

But, objectively speaking, the only proven way to eliminate this noise is to cover it up with insulation, that's what every other manufacturer seems to do. Hell there have already been hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars thrown at developing a quiet HPFP:

After 2+ years of this car chirping in customer hands, Toyobaru don't perceive it as a serious problem. Plenty of people have blown their lids over the noise, had the pump replaced half a dozen times, lemon lawed it or just didn't buy the car in the first place. A strong dose of 'mellow out' seems to be the most effective remedy in many people's opinions, and I think it's worth noting: you can't hear it when your foot is on the floor.

I hope you find a solution that works for you, I really do, and if it leads to something that can help all owners all the better.

Tick, click, rattle, clatter...I accept that as normal for a HPFP. Diesels have been doing it for years. It's just the nature of the beast. I can live with that. The squeak/crickets, on the other hand, not normal, and extremely aggravating. Sure, you don't hear it when your foot is on the floor...hell, you don't even hear it just above idle, but you have to idle sometime. I'm a windows down kind of guy, and when I pull up beside another vehicle at a stop light, I don't want to hear that sound echoing back at me. Damn. It sounds like a '96 neon with a couple hundred thousand miles on the accessory belt. Fack! It's like fingernails down a Goddamn chalkboard. Wait, I got it...It's like that nutty chick you went out with a while back...beautiful to look at, and all kinds of fun to throw around, but the sounds coming out her mouth hole would drive a crazy man sane! (should have tried feeding her some 2-stroke oil)

Inevitably, the low cost of the car will be brought up again. Yes, it was built to meet a price point. Great. Love the car. Hate the crickets. I don't care if the freakin' thing cost 99 cents, that noise ain't right.

They say the noise is not detrimental (though it drives me mental), and that no harm will come, but I think the harm is done. You see, I believe I'm developing orthopterophobia. I can't get them out of my head. I hear them in my sleep...taunting me. "We're here (chirp chirp), and we're not going away (chirp chirp)".

Damn crickets.

I would gladly accept insulating and reducing the noise to inaudible or barely audible levels to be a fix. I'm currently planning on getting the HPFP replaced sometime soon, and when that doesn't fix it, I'm calling Subaru of America. I feel like too many people are sitting back and hoping others will do this, so barely anyone is doing it.

I had extra insulation all over my fuel pump that Toyota did. I ended up removing it all because it doesn't do anything in reducing the sound. All it did was probably increase the heat temperature inside. Been having better luck with the Lucas Upper Cylinder cleaner in my fuel tank. Several 95+ degree days and haven't heard loud chirping. Maybe a hint of it faintly, but more times than a few, I don't hear anything at all.

This didn't completely eliminate the crickets, but they pop up much less often. And when they do, they're a lot quieter as well.

So the dealer replaced my pump. They noticed the noise during an inspection and said they would replace it. I didn't think it would do anything, but had them do it anyway so any future issue couldn't be attributed to me not getting the fuel pump replaced.

One tank of gas later, the chirps are back . Not as loud as the old pump (yet) but I'm sure it will be.

Matt I had zero luck with the Lucas upper cylinder lube, it did not even affect my crickets in the least. I tried it before the two-cycle oil. I am glad it works for you.

On a separate note, I am averaging about 1.5 miles per gallon better fuel economy during daily driving now than before the lucas two cycle oil that cured my crickets. This is after five or six tanks using the oil.(it is one or the other, I just lost count) It has been that little bit better literally since the first time I used it. I don't baby my car , but I don't abuse it. I drive it spiritedly, but try to take exceptional care of it. It sees hard acceleration and sporty cornering with regularity.

Yes, I do it every time. Once you determine the two cycle oil works for you, then buy a gallon or larger jug. It'll save you $
