That's also annoying. The EPS is ok but It's still not as nice as my old purely mechanical 240Z.

edit: I think I understand what you meant. There's raw and then there's old & beat up. I don't think you're missing out on much. Although the engine management and stability are all high-tech, the FRS is quite raw. It's really the best of both worlds.
It's raw by todays standards. It's not raw by 90s standards.

Don't say good things about Mitsu on this forum. They will break out the torches and pitchforks and hunt you down.

My cousin had a VR-4 and occasionally would let me drive it. These cars were a blast. They are heavy cars but still offered a fun driving experience. He eventually traded somebody for their TT Targa Supra.

+1 on the weak transmission. A buddy of mine had three in highschool and he was always hot swapping transmissions as they could never seem to keep up with the rest of the car.

... Also, if it isn't a VR-4, it's just a better looking eclipse. They do NOT handle well as FWD.

The vr-4's were fantastic for their time. Even the DOHC base models had serious potential if you could get over them being FWD. Their internals were forged and the tt kit could bolt up to them with relative ease. Not to mention the Getrag from the VR4 converted to FWD made it bullet proof. That thing could handle anything you threw at it.

I had-
1999 SOHC (Daily Driver)
1995 BPU vr-4
1994 Base DOHC converted to Single turbo pushing 550whp and gutted to 2700lbs (was a beast from a roll)
They were all great in their own ways.

I guess I don't really have a qualified opinion by my list of 70-240Z, 91-Eclipse, FRS. I haven't driven many other go-kartish cars. I can only really compare it to my Z. The Eclipse felt downright cushy, wouldn't you say, @Tcoat?

I remember first seeing the TTs in Hungary the summer of 98 and making the mistake of telling my brother I thought they looked cool. He gave me the most disgusted look and said "Auugh, fucking chick cars." I was so embarrassed they never made my list. I feel a little conflicted whenever I see one.

The Talon was not on stock suspension and with the AWD weight it wasn't really all that cushy. In fact it was rather bone jarring at times. I still miss that car sometimes but it went to a better place. In fact I am going to see if I can still find it online as it was actually quite famous locally after the guy that bought it was done with it.

I raced one in LeMons, specifically a 3000GT SL (DOHC FWD). I called it a Japanese Buick, because it was huge on the outside and had a comically small interior. It was absurdly complicated, but advanced, with way too many control modules. The car was surprisingly fun on track, and would lift-off oversteer at speed and had great ABS.

I think I can hustle that thing around Buttonwillow faster than my FRS, but then again I had a cage and gave zero F's about touching dirt, etc.

I like their sleeper and limited production aspect. I just like limited production cars from the 90s.

The 70s through 90s were pretty awful for cars. A 2002 would be fun, as would a Porsche, but most cars were overweight, unsafe in a crash, and terrible at handling. This was ok in the 60a,when you got big power, but without the power, no thanks.

I would take a lotus, though. Bond, James Bond.

80's are the hot ticket now for beater track rats, their values are climbing as nostalgia kicks in and the guys who wanted those cars new 30 years ago have the money to get the toy car from their youth in the garage, E30's MR2's, RX-7's, Supra's, Fox Body Mustangs, Third Gen Camaros, and on and on.

None of 'em came with more than 200hp stock but most are 2,500 lbs or less, electronics are rudimentary and easy to work with and the chassis/suspension setups were the first forays into what we have today or the final refinement of old tech (live axles and swing arms) and as such can take modest power increases taking them into a modern performance realm.

tl;dr the guy with an '87 325i was slower than a brand new GTR on Hoosier A7's by 0.8 seconds and he beat out a '14 Boxster S also on A7's at the last autocross I went to.
