Its hard to do as described and wear the others down and be right in the process. Unless learned in a scholarly manner, theres always a chance that its wrong.

Like trying to argue physics with others, due to their intuition and standard mis conceptions about physics they think they know what theyre talking about (trying to find the least douche-est way to say that), unless studied in the classsroom.

i.e the infamous drive shaft thread.

My very favorite was the 20 or so pages of debate on what the proper tire pressure was for the stock tires. Of course you may change it for special circumstances but the answer is so easy. The "proper" pressure is written on the sides of the tires. The quasi physics and anecdotal evidence that was thrown around as fact on that thread was hilarious.

I will dispute that the only way to learn such things is in the classroom though. There is much to be said for many, many years of hands on experience and acquired knowledge as well. I can go toe to toe with most junior/midlevel engineers on many subjects (put me against a senior one with school and many years of experience and I am probably screwed though) even though I never even finished high school. Please don't turn into one of the "I am an engineer and nobody else knows squat" guys or you may find you have a hard time in real life.

I'm confused about what you just said.
The pressure rating on the side of the tires is maximum rated pressure and is not the correct pressure to run. For stock tires on stock wheels the correct tire pressure will be in the owners manual (and probably on a sticker elsewhere in the car). Often it will list two pressures, one for lower/normal load ranges and one for high load as well as pressures for other size wheels/tires that the car may have come with. Beyond that, small changes can be made in pressure based on the tires wear patterns.
Once you go to different sized rims and/or tires the manufacturers recommended pressure is invalid, but may be a good starting point.

Ya, I simplified it for the sake of the point and wasn't going into the tech on purpose but that was what I meant by "Of course you may change it for special circumstances". Oh and this is exactly how the other thread started! If you had thrown the words "contact patch" in there 5 or 6 times then it would have been highly nostalgic for many.

I find myself too willing to learn new things to come across as a competant know it all, that and i have alot of folks keeping me from accelerating towards the clouds lol. Its nice to freely admit that I am not the smartest guy in theroom (hardly ever am) it allows me to draw from anecdotes and the like. Not until recently did i actually enjoy learning. Mostly because its about my passion, but before it was just depressing and a debby downer.

I use the classroom example as the opposite end to the extreme that those who read a few articles on the internet then 'suddenly' become experts on the case. Articles written by journalists, not someone who has been in the applied field.

I almost did, I was half trying to be ironic. But also I've seen ppl put their tires at the max pressure which can be dangerous when the driver isn't aware that it is the incorrect pressure and can adversely affect handling.

I hear you on all counts! The failure of print communication made you sound extreme. The internet has been both a valuable ally and a mortal enemy in my job for the last 20 years. Every single week I have to debunk some myth that somebody read on the internet and posted as the "truth". Probably part of the reason I get so pissed when the click bait articles get posted here.

It happens. The difference is when people recognise they erred, acknowledge it and make it right.
What you spotted was a small section intended for a totally different topic and point anyway.
Besides anybody that is looking on this thread for tire pressure info has wandered far astray in the first place.

Personally I think there should be a sub forum under each section that is used specifically for storing valuable threads. So there won't be as much research required like how it is now.

That's what stickied threads are for. Of course it will help when someone takes the time to compile useful info into a single post rather than spread through several pages of posts of mixed usefulness.

I know there are stickies threads. But I think those should be reserved thread from mods. I'm used to how Asian forums tend to have their " bread & butter" sub forum under all sections on top of stickies threads. Personally that system is more flexible & filters out more useful stuff.

It does sound like a good idea, just not exactly the structure I'm used to.
