Audio recording can require consent from both parties in some states, which could invalidate your video as evidence if you submit it with audio. Check your local laws.

It's easier to just get a video-only cam if you are unsure.

That's why GM recalled Corvettes to disable audio in their Valet Mode baby monitor.

For potential buyers, note that there are a ton of knockoffs out there. Check specs, reviews and returns policy before buying. Dashcamtalk links to reputable sellers, some with coupon codes that make them cheaper than eBay knockoffs.

I wonder if one could use a USB battery backup and have it always plugged into the lighter socket and into the Dashcam so that when parked and car off the camera will always be available in motion detect mode and the battery pack will be charging when the car is on.
Thats not a bad idea (using a USB power brick) to keep dashcam in standby mode until motion is detected. That's for the idea.

I just turn off the mic in the cam settings. I don't want in-car conversations recorded.

I never really thought about this. It's actually a good idea to have recorded and accident rather than win over a cop with your lvl 20 charisma. Also, if something cool happens like tanks rolling across the freeway or meteorites burning up in the atmosphere. Only in Russia I guess...

If you are both in public it's not illegal in any state that I'm aware of. As for inside the car, that could be more of an issue. There was mention of the Corvette camera being disabled, but I am curious if it had a flashing light as my dashcam does. I *suspect* that is enough notification that it's recording.

Another vote for the B40/A118. Installed mine in December and it's been good so far, considering the price. I like that it's pretty discrete, too.

Actually looking at the recent news stories....it might be handy to be able to film a plane crash.

Lool I knew someone was going to bring this up. I almost mentioned it in my post.

Only seems true if you're in Asia, considering their track record lately.

I got a BlackVue DR530W for $200 off eBay. Added $40 for the squaretrade warranty. Been working flawlessly so so far, no heating issues. Sales over now but it was a steal when I got it 5 months ago.

This model came with a front and rear cam and some neat features. Wifi so I can stream to my smartphone instantly, sound on/off, adjust settings via smartphone app, g sensor, and parking mode. Just gotta buy the parking mode adapter from Blackvue to prevent a dead battery. Day quality is great. A little harder to see at night. Easy DIY install. All wires are tucked, front camera is neatly hidden behind my rear view mirror, and the rear camera is so small it's not even noticeable.

I can't drive without a camera after what happened with a jackass cutting me off in my motorcycle, causing me to high side.

^^ Yeah if/when I get one I want front and rear. So many dumb things happen all around me every day and it would have proven what I didn't do wrong last time I got rear ended and the bimbo split before I could get out of the car and get my cell phone camera fired up. I also like the idea of being able to tether to the phone to send live shots of what is happening. You could prove to the wife that you really are on the way home, prove to the boss that you really are stuck in traffic or show off to your interweb buddies in real time
