Tires have been patched for quite a long time. I might not track on patched tires, but for the road they're fine ad long as the structure isn't compromised. Those DRM rules look pretty darn conservative and yet his screw is within the main tread so it's fine on that count.
I don't disagree about the tire patching part for a road driven car as long as it is done properly and within the accepted limits of safety. I have a repaired tire on my xB right now, that happened within the last 6 months also but 3 had to be replaced and I was given the same answer by all three places. Did I verify it, no as I felt my old high school friend was giving me an honest answer when I called him. He didn't give me the 2 inches answer, but what he did say was that the puncture has to be repairable and that the patch cannot touch any part of the sidewall because that is prohibited and he could be held liable in court as well as fined by the government if he were to repair a tire improperly.

Both the other places gave me the 2 inches answer, but they are both in Arkansas so possibly that is a state requirement. I called him as a way to verify the tire shops weren't trying to screw me over.

In the end, I suggest the OP do what his local reputable tire shop recommends and what his conscience tells him to do. Considering it looks like he's running aftermarket performance tires, I am assuming he is driving the car in ways other than point A to B at 55 mph. If that is the case, I would replace not repair.

Yet.
In the same light as someone working at heights but choose not to use a harness correctly?
Or stretched shitty tires for stance? i.e. 215 on 10inch.

Depending on where in Norcal you are, maybe just put a bunch more screws in for winter/studded tires?

Jkjk...I didn't read through the whole thread, but try going back where you got the tires at. Also, contact Nitto, many tire companies will help you out if something like this happens when its relatively new.

Thanks for the info guys....for now I'm gonna take off the tire and bring it in to a shop and have them look it to see what can be done. Then I'll mount that wheel back on the front of thecar since it was on the rear. I am still thinking about buying a new tire just to be safe though after I temporary fix the problem =/

THIS! I plug all the time. I have a plug in my tire right now, zero issues and it has been half a year (rear tire too)

The difference between the sport car community and off road community is amazing. These cars are generally driven more aggressively on the roads though, so safety becomes a large concern. I punctured my sidewall while crawling through a creek bed and drove with the plugs for probably 6k miles before replacing the tires. Two plugs per hole, no issues, no leaks. Doesn't mean it was a good idea or that it was safe. With that being said, I'd plug the "shoulder" in a heartbeat. Might not race on that tire, but I'd daily it without a second thought.

I'll leave this here to horrify you:

way too close to the shoulder for me to be comfortable just getting it patched. ive had a handful of tires patched before, but not when its that close to the shoulder.

Yea... my shop wouldn't go near that tire. has liability written all over it. 1/4 from sidewall is a no go for me!

As a tire engineer, I would say you're probably still within the sidewall compound area of that bolt/screw went all the way through. Get a new tire, not worth the risk IMO.

BOTH of my sons work at different tire shops (Walmart & Discount Tire).
They BOTH looked at the OPs pictures and said that they would NOT fix the OP's tire due to liability issues.
In fact they said that they would not even have plugs that big (the bolt is bigger than a 1/4")

Yes a temporary plug would be fine for a fix to get you through a couple of days until it can be properly fixed.

If you read any of the links posted above (Tirerack has an excellent section on tire technical and repair issues: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tiretech.jsp
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=187)

they explain WHY just a plug is a very bad idea as a permanent fix.

Was the tire engineer's reply RIGHT above yours not good enough? I'd trust him over the vastly less educated tire installer every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I think it can be patched. I had a nail in one of my tires and took it to get patched for $5. Been like 3 months and still running fine.
