Salesmen need to learn the products they are selling as well as the competitor's offerings. I shopped a 12' Hyundai Accent for my sister and I knew more about the car (after 30 minutes of internet research) than the salesman showing me the car. We live in an information age, I don't see why salesmen don't know much about their product. We might as well just start skipping the salesman and start going straight to the manager and financing dept.

Whenever I am dealing with a salesman I do my research and always ask an obscure question just to see if they know their stuff. If they don't, which is usually the case, it puts me in a better bargaining position when they realize I'm not a dummy. Lexus salesmen seem to be the best as far as knowledge.

I would have ordered my damn car on the internet if it meant not dealing with a car salesman/dealership.

Sure and they're breakin' down the walls to sell you that Accent.

My dad was a salesman at Lexus since 1994, and was continuously one of the best in the Midwest. They sent him to Chicago like 3 times a year to learn about the cars. It still amazes me how much he knows about the cars now that he is the financial manager. It's the knowledge that he had that kept his customers happy and coming back to him. He'll tell you why the 1998 GS400 had paddle shifters and why they went away. Go ask any other Lexus salesman that question and I guarantee they won't know. Of course I'm a little biased because he's my father, but he showed with his success and customer support that he knows a ton about what he is selling.

To give a counter example to all of these shenanigans.

The sales rep that sold me my FR-S knew her shit. She was 1) a former pro race driver, 2) owns a NSX, 3) owns a BRZ. In talking with her, it was clear that she was these things and not just blowing smoke up my ass. Incidentally, I didn't know about the BRZ until after I bought the car. I had to go back to get my garage door opener from my trade-in and she was waiting for me out front in it. Had a discussion about and it was a long story, not scandalous.

I shopped at a wide range of dealerships before settling on the FRS, and except for one dealership group (multiple brands) I came away reasonably impressed. They generally didn't know more than I did, but they were helpful and low-key. I don't know if the competition from straight Internet sales has taught them that they can't be so aggressively unpleasant, or maybe it's just my luck in the particular folks I dealt with, but car shopping was actually fun, contrary to my expectation.

Just want to remind everyone that while shopping for a car you will zero in on maybe two to five different cars. Most manufactures have over 12 different models! Then you have all these dealerships with multiple brands under one roof. Then each of the cars will completely change on a regular cycle. Sometimes drastically!

It's definitely the cars that inspire the most passion are the hardest to satisfy the guys who have followed it from concept to production in anticipation.

I actually take allot of pride in my product knowledge and am a go too guy for allot of questions, but I grantee I don't know everything and couldn't possibly imagine a day when I would. But I try my best.

Even if he was correct, I'd have asked him many sales he has gained over the competition because of compression ratio.
