Here in New York they only bother for tint, loud exhausts, and sometimes HIDs since they can be mistaken for driving with your high beams. All I know is that ANY aftermarket tint is illegal. I had a conversation with a cop and he says they just hate how stupid ricer exhausts sound; he said they usually sound like the car is passing gas down the street. xD They don't mind Muscle Cars, Exotics, or Tuners if their exhaust sounds "decent"; usually the silencer gives it a more appropriate note.

All in all... Strict emissions, high taxes, and mostly sunny weather makes Cali the best place to live...
if only aem made decent products. ive been pulled over in a swapped crx, miata, ae86 and a 240sx but ive never been asked to check for illegal parts

Yeah, that's one of the good things about living here. Most of the time cops just go after the really blatant ricers and tarted up beaters because they are generally young and reckless anyway. California emissions is one of many reasons why even though I'd prefer to live out west coast I'd NEVER live in cali.

Is there a limit you can get on fix-it tickets before something more severe happens? The biggest thing keeping me from moving to Cali is the engine swap in my car. It's gotta be cleaner than the 26-yr-old 4AGE that it came with, but because I got no EGR, I'd fail a visual inspection. I still run PCV, evap canister and a cat Good enough for Japan ain't good enough for the People's Republic of California! The one saving grace of Massachusetts is that pre-OBDII cars don't have to pass emissions anymore, but we don't have a dB limit on exhaust noise, so cops can make a completely subjective judgement on whether an exhaust system is illegal or not. I gotta get outta this state, man!

Damn pigs...

By the way, I ain't buying any of those crap ad campaigns Cali has been putting out recently that preach, "California is wonderful!" "California is amazing!" "We have so many unnecessary laws and regulations you'll LOVE IT!"

Uh, no. I may be called a redneck by some people, but the Deep South is one of the few places left where people are actually free. I have never had to take an emissions test in the 8 years I've lived here. On any car.

Cops here are bias, they will pull over imports and write you up for upgrading your exhaust but when an american muscle would pass them running free flows or magnaflows they dont bother them. thank god that i have friends in the force..

Infractions for no front license plate and tint are bogus. "Pop the hood for me sir" yeah no, unless you have a valid reason to check. Cops should enforce the law when the safety of the general public is at stake, busting someone for no font license plate, tint and suspected engine mods on a brand new vehicle...stop wasting our time/money popo!

We'd all be better off driving Tesla's, Focus electric's and numerous other souless electrical appliances on wheels if the local government were to have their way here in CA. The FR-S is a big bird to that line of thought.

You have to keep in mind certain roads are known for attracting people driving high performance machinery, be it bikes or cars, and for this reason attract more attention from local law enforcement authorities. If you're a SoCal native you know better than to be pushing your luck on a road like Angeles Crest. It's common sense, and I have NO pitty for you if you get caught. It's the risk you took. On the other hand, I really don't get what the hang up is about what mods people make to their cars under the hood. There's no way companies like Greddy would manufacture parts that would only land customers in the crap hole if they got pulled over for being out of compliance with local government rules and regs for aftermarket auto parts. That's just bad business, but then again i'm completely ignorant to modding cars having never done it before.
