You could even high rev launch the things without much worry. Not that it helped a whole lot. The diff didn't take it so well though as I discovered when mine seized solid ta 60mph on the highway. Never did fine one of the hubcaps since they went straight out and continued down the road at full speed. Those damn SS caps were expensive as hell too. I think I paid $25 to replace it.

Yes "Slip and Slide with Powerglide" was a popular saying.

I had the hubcaps stolen 3 times. Each time I swear I went to hubcap city and bought the same set back.

I had a 1978 euro GTI (round headlight)when they were Rabbits here in the US. It had like 50 more HP than the Rabbits. My first FWD car. It was real fun. My dad bought it in 78, and I bought it from him in 80. The gas shortages made Eco boxes very popular back then. My Dad was on a list, and wanted a white one. He got a call one night that there was a white one in LA. He took it. When it got here it was white with a big red strip, sunroof, and driving lights in the grill. They took the GTI emblems off and put Rabbit emblems on, but it still had the factory oil cooler, bigger throttle body, and all the other GTI goodies. It was fast.

Yes I liked the MK1 better than the MK2. Mine was manufactured in PA and was probably not quite as well made as the previous models.
Never bought a German car since.
