I'm sure the engine will hold together alright. The tranny may as well. As a car to drive, it's crap. The Korean brands are the Washington Generals of the automotive kingdom. They're always almost making a decent car. They make great TVs and phones, but their cars have consistently been almost but not quite good enough. Also, their dealerships are consistently awful. Last Kia I drove was a Soul EV. It was a soulless EV, a Leaf equivalent.

For me, the FRS is the better choice. I came from a line of Protégés and Mazda 3's as part of my driving background. I absolutely loved my Protégé5 and lightly modified it when I owned it with Tein S tech springs, kartboy ss, and headers.
I also used to work at the Hyundai dealership a couple years back and had numerous opportunities to drive the Genesis coupe. To me, I felt it was overweight, had softer suspension and had a less connected feeling with the car and road. The transmission to me felt sloppy versus my P5 but it did have a good amount of power. The suspension was also quite soft in my opinion for a sports car. Finally what would a comment comparing the frs vs others be without one of the frs. I feel that yes, the FRS is underpowered however the suspension, transmission, lightweight feeling of the FRS made up for that difference. I do track my car every once and a while and have found modifying the car quite easy. I will also say, the driving style is going to differ but in a good way. The frs will be your greatest teacher but will also be your greatest enemy if you don't respect it. I hope this helps and best of luck! |

If cargo space is a factor, I'd go with Tcoat's recommendation of looking at hot hatches. Test drive Ford's 2 ST models, the VW GTI, and even the Scion TC (check out the Release 10). Better yet why not take the drum set with you to see if they'll fit on any of the cars you'll be looking at (including the FRS). Don't limit your list to 2 cars. Do go for test drives, take your time, don't settle, and get what's best for you.

Gen coupe if you need little bit more space, I figured out that Genesis has a much bigger space for trunk. But if you want a 2 door sports car that can handle like a beast, get that BRZ/FRS.

I'm sure later in life I'll NEED something with more cargo room, but right now I'm sort of at a middle ground where I'm not travelling with my band gear hardly ever these days, and I also don't have a family or anything to haul. I've always wanted a fun, good looking sports car and I think now might be the time. Also, I'm really digging that release 1.0 Yuzu color with the TRD kit. I found one I might go check out locally. 40k miles, 22k asking price. Is this is a good deal? I thought I might be able to talk them to 20k~ |

Full bias here:
I hate the genesis coupe. FRS/BRZ is better. I don't even know why I even bothered to cross shop the two when I was buying a new one. Consider a WRX as a competitive option if you need more practicality. the gen coupe can go in the trash bin now. |

The backup camera on the 16 FRS is pretty good.

When I was shopping, I first looked for a 2015 because I didn't want the backup camera. Couldn't find one so I "ended up" with a 2016. But, yeah, it is a nice feature and works pretty good. It's really great when there is a huge SUV parked next to you and you need to see around it to back up.
Correct. No lines. But I don't think it's really necessary. The camera is positioned and angled such that it gives a good indication of how close your rear bumper is to the objects behind you. |

Backup camera can be installed super easy if it didn't come with one. I have a 13 and its just like oem, I installed it myself and I'm the biggest noob. I paid $250 for mine, but it's an oem camera with the pnp harness.

I know it's the readheaded brother to the FRS, but the BRZ has the warning lines for the backup, but they don't move to show where you're going. Just straight out the back.
