anyway the manual tranny has a dipstick like the subaru wrx's underneath all the cabling in an awkward position on the side, hard to find but it was found.. eventually.. its where the transmission filler plug is on the side.. not sure if the gts has it like the gt does but worth checking.. if not you'll have to either jack up your car and remove the underneath cover or try bend in from the top and remove the filler plug on the side of the transmission and insert a dipstick to check if there is any

hope this helps

1. Filling up petrol - have done three tanks in this car now, every single time I fill up im having the petrol spit out once it hits around 3/4 tank!? Literally 100ml of it all over my hand and the car. Really wierd. Is anybody else getting this?

2. Gears / Gearbox - Finding that 1st > 2nd and 3rd > 2nd is hard to engage. Has been like this since I left the dealership, however seems to be worse when its cold (especially with the way the weather's been here in Sydney)

If it shifts with difficulty when cold, then shifts better when warm, that could be normal. The gearbox oil works better when it is up to temperature. If you had no oil at all in the gearbox, the it should shift hard all the time, hot or cold.

Can't comment on your petrol spills.

Havent noticed anything about the gearbox - but the brakes are soooooo stif.
update on petrol... filling up third tank after light came on. filled up at 40ltrs and no spilling.

at 1000kms now and the gear shift (auto) is much smoother, brakes are not so clunky and handles heaps better.

I haven't had any really issues with filling up. The first time, when I put the nossle all the way in it kept clicking out like it was full so I moved it back one notch and no dramas just a lil spitting when it was full but no splashing.

No issues with gear box, though once or twice first didn't seem like it was fully engaged so just double pumped the clutch and all was good.

If 1 and 2 have triple synchros, as some have stated, it can feel that way.

The gearbox seems to be fine, probably just that cold weather we had.

Im going to fill up at a different servo this time.

any splashback from the filler neck will always cause it to click off because it thinks its full.

Well, I got it back from my dealer and they changed the oil to a thinner oil!

Damn this this feels amazing now, not just getting locked out of the gear dosen't happen at all (cold or warm!) but no crunching noises at all!

Said it was viscosity issue. Used some Subaru trans oil apparently(could get the oil wight out of him )

^^I imagine that, as time goes by, we will get a sense of which transmission oil works best in the car. Oftentimes, the OEM product works best; in some cases, an alternative from a quality manufacturer works better.

This is an interesting topic. On my MY07 WRX STi, with the DCCD, I had a LOT of clunking when going around slow speed turns (ie, car park).
A lot of reading on the nasioc forums in the usa led me to choose a different diff oil.
In the end I went with Motylgear 75W90 Gear oil and magically, all the clunking stopped.

Maybe trying different trans fluid may help with the cold shifting...

In that case they've gone from 75W90 to 75W90. That said, there are different types (containing different levels of anti-wear product) and not all can be used on all types of transmissions. See API ratings here.

From personal experience with the getrag 6 speed in my previous supra's , the gearbox is well known to be very notchy / crunchy.

It was very hard to engage 1st gear in the morning and the shifting was not very pleasant .

Did some research and decided to try Royal Purple gearbox oil and let me tell it changed the whole driving experience. It was the best thing ever, silky smooth gear changes... was brilliant.

Back in the day I used order it from the USA but I know for a fact burson automotive is importing this product in Australia.

Not sure if it is suited for 86 but its definitely better than toyota oil in my opinion.
