OP-I dont know about blinking colons but a friend of mine who was in the military told me when you're getting shot at your nerves are so bad you anus starts winking.

That's bad design. A device such as a clock should not have any distracting elements that seek attention in your peripheral vision. The displays of these devices should "disappear" in the background.

I might be particularly sensitive to this type of stuff. For my desktop workstation, I have disabled the LED lights on my monitor, speakers, and tower. They weren't blinking, but they were too bright.
