The new flagship Mercedes was named best "Driver's Car", perhaps in part due to the fact they won Formula 1 convincingly for a while.
In the mid-90's, and with all due respect and no disrespect; you could literally drive an S-Class into a concrete pillar at 100k/hr. and survive. RIP, PBUH. When I was a young man, the average car thief could steal a car in less than a moments time. Mercedes was the most difficult to steal at the time as it was told. Today, all it takes is a magnet or coat hanger to break into my FR-S and steal my sunglasses that even the poorest of pensioners couldn't afford in 2 weeks. |

Although it may be the same result, I'd say you still have to be careful or at least take preventative action. It is inevitable. Like some places on the strip; you need more security, more frisking, more body cavity searches probably maybe because of the music being played is my guess. |

Japanese car has better design with caring in mind - they tried to find a way that is best performance and easy for user to repair or extend the reliability. German cars are opposite, they just cramp the part in there and end up with difficult in repair or replace. I had a c36 Amg for a while and my biodegradable harness degraded itself and cause shortage. Cost me $1800 to have it replace. The mechanic told me all of the Mercedes at that era (late 90s ) has same problem. Your friend is comparing a lexury car to a econo sports car, that is not a valid comparison. A current Hyundai ( which was joke in 90s) now could pack more "engineer" than your friends Mbz. A Prius also have more "engineering" than his Mbz. Anyway, my point is that our car is a simple fun sports car and that is the soul of AE86

Over the lifetime of your 86 compare against your friend's Merc the number of repairs made, cost of repairs and number of days spent off the road. You'll see the difference in german engineering. They make great cars when they work, but the problem is, things always break in german cars and it costs a lot to fix. That's why IMHO german cars suck.
I won't own another german car- working on them sucks, it's a PITA when they always have something wrong with them, every nut bolt and doodad costs twice what it should- you basically become a guinnea pig to test the latest tech they want to shove in the car. In the end, most people who buy german either get a Porsche that they know is going to be a PITA but nothing drives like a Porsche (which is true) or a similar high end sports car and reliability is not an issue- or they are buying a name brand and they are either clueless about what a POS they are getting into or don't care but now everyone will know they are a douchebag and that cache is important to them. People will pay a lot and put up with a lot to be seen in the "right" car. |

It's all about how much spent by the manufacturer and expected sale price. They(Merc) Spend more in r&d and materials compared to most non luxury brands. That's what their customers want and are willing to pay more for all the extra features and "higher end" equipment.
