Not sure anybody can say they're the standard for mpgs. Where I live I sometimes have to drive a mile uphill and a mile downhill in a single trip, and can max out at 20-25 mpg on those instances going uphill if I'm careful.. Thankfully almost all my driving is on well paved, smooth roads which seems to help sometimes get 30-40 mpgs. Cruising at level ground, even with rpms near 4000, I can get some real high numbers.

Hmm. This car is meant to use 0W-20 oil.
We are also able to use 5W-30 if 0W-20 is unavailable or for top ups but the book says to go back to the thinner stuff at the next oil change.
Apart from fuel consumption, what, if any, downsides are there for the 5W-30? It is less expensive, and easier to come by, and could be expected to give greater protection. The poorer consumption would be offset by the difference in cost and possible long-term wear benefit. Does the thick stuff mess with variable valve timing?
Has anyone changed to 5W-30 and noticed a significant increase in fuel consumption.

I doubt it would affect fuel consumption. Quite a few guys are running 5w30 or heavier in their track cars. To my knowledge, all new cars use 0w20. Perhaps it saves wear when people drive them cold? Unless you have a good reason to switch(like the oil can't handle track heat) other than saving 5$ every oil change... I'd stick with OEM recommendation. I'm sure they decided on that viscosity for a reason. Maybe manufacturing tolerances have gotten tighter and needs the super watery synthetic oil to get into the gaps that conventional oils from the 90s can't

lol at all this "I/we've got 200hp sport cars" of course we don't get good gas mileage! We've got sport cars!

Looks like sports car is a pretty loose term...

But I do personally feel we should be better gas mileage...I know some people claim like 40mpg, but I see a ton in the low 20's which is damn low for the engine size and whatnot.

Granted, I think mostly its the drivers lol.

This^

Over the years, I've been more than convinced that MPG has more to do with where you drive and how you drive. Right pedal goes down, MPG goes down.

Highway drive for 3 hours on cruise control, with some manual pedal work for the mountain passes: 36 MPG
Commute to work for 20 minutes with 40% highway: 24-27
Fun time? yeah it goes pretty low.

That doesn't mean I'm disappointed with the mileage. Ive had a civic that got 40, but it had 100 hp and a 1.7, but ive also had a Mini with a 1.6 and 170hp that got worse than the BRZ, couldn't get it above 25 MPG. Its all relative depending on what you've driven before. I for one am surprised at how well this car does for the amount of power it has with the engine configuration it has.

Yeah I honestly don't get it. I do mostly highway driving and have generally gotten 29-31 mpg. My 2004 BMW 330ci gets the same mileage! I guess N/A four cylinder engines can lose their efficiency very quick when they're tuned for power.

On a similar note, I had a 5 speed, 95 camry with the 2.2L 4cyl giving me 30 mpg, mostly highway. I currently have a 97 Avalon, 3.0 V6 with a 4 speed auto, giving me 27-29 mpg on mostly highway driving. It is just so weird to me that I've gotten similar gas mileage out of 6 cylinder engines as "big" 4 cyl engines! If anyone has any explanations, I would like to hear
