The Type R was never meant to be affordable to young adults. The Integra Type R was $24,000 in 1996. If you want affordable Honda go buy a Civic Si for a little less than a BRZ.

NSX Land already has their baby NSX. I wish we got it here.

Maybe I should say young child NSX then. I don't know how I feel about the S660 tbh

No. One's a sports car. The other is just some dumpy econobox that people who couldn't afford the real thing at the inflated sports car prices of the late 80s and early 90s inherited from their moms and pretended was a sports car. RWD wasn't anything special back then and didn't turn an econobox into a sports car. It only served as a concession to people who still wouldn't buy a FWD car.

I was 13 when the AE86 first came out, just about the age where boys started to get seriously interested in cars, since we could get learner's permits at 15. Absolutely nobody was dreaming about a fucking Corolla. That was the car your dad bought to save gas going to work, then handed down to your older sister until she got a new car for graduation. Then you inherited it reluctantly (hey, at least you had a car) and had to scrape the stupid flower decals off the windows so people wouldn't think you were a pansy. When you went out with friends, you piled into someone's Cutlass or Regal so you wouldn't have to be seen out in the shitbox.

Nobody considered it a sports car or a performance car of any kind. It wasn't until translations of Initial D hit the US in 2002 that people started concocting these imaginary backstories in which you envision us drifting rice buckets on Saturday night.

But that's America, back then people were fawning over 80s Camaros which are pretty much forgotten about these days (for good reason). In other parts of the world the ae86 was almost instantly recognized as a tuner friendly car with lots of potential. I'm not talking about the base SR5 version, I'm talking about the GTS or whatever the equivalent was in other countries.

There is a reason the author of Initial D used the AE86 in the first place, it's not like they picked a cheap econobox at random. Sure maybe it's not a dedicated sports car like the GT86, but to say the cars are not similar to each other in terms of ideology seems a little silly to me.

I had never heard of nor had any clue than an AE86 existed until I read the history on this very forum. No idea. None. Never heard of it.

Maybe he picked it because it was easy to draw?

Or maybe he saw the European Tour Championship race in 1986 where a modified 86 beat cars like the BMW M6 and Merkur XR4T.

The GTS was available with a 5-speed transmission, LSD, 4 wheel disc brakes, and an engine that revved to 7,500rpm. That's pretty damn impressive for an affordable car made in 1985. Add Toyota reliability to the mix and you have a hell of a daily driver.

I didn’t know about the original 86 until I started watching initial D. I know everyone says they are overrated, but after seeing Petrolicious’s video on YouTube about them, I wish they were cheap so I could have a matching set of 86s...

They picked it because it was a realistic choice of a hand-me-down econobox delivery car that instantly put the driver in the position of underdog having to rely entirely on his own skill. This is a common theme in manga. Our hero starts with inferior equipment but perseveres and overcomes its limitations.

They did the same thing in Capeta with the go-kart with the cracked frame. The AE86 is the tofu shop equivalent of a broken go-kart.

By the way, this was bugging me as something unlikely, so I went to look it up:

The AE86 didn't win anything in the 1986 European Touring Car Championship. The Champion drove a BMW. The AE86 didn't win any of the individual rounds. Toyota won the manufacturer's points competition, which is one of those consolation prizes they give out so that manufacturers will stay interested. The car they used was so heavily modified that it bears little relation to the econobox you could buy for your daughter to drive to college.

Notice that NSX is a Honda, only an Acura here for us. Such silly games.

That’s honestly too bad, I guess the AE86 really wasn’t anything special, unless you were in the mountains...and even there, the BMW etc would probably win. R.I.P

It definitely seems like the current 86. Not the fastest car sat all but addicting in the way the whole driving experience comes together.

What's to feel? It's a kei car. It's not even meant for you.

Can you even buy one in Canada? We can buy the Beat in the US, but the S660 won't be legal here until 2040.

I should have known better than to make a joke about an anime show.
