The NADA/blue book values you are looking at are the trade in price not the retail price. Of course the trade in value is lower since the car has to be resold at a profit. The retail prices listed are averages and the actual amount they are selling for can vary significantly based on your region and the supply and demand in that area at any given time. It does suck that the insurance companies use the lowest value they can find when setting prices but that is the way that capitalism works. Everybody wants to sell high and buy low but at some point somebody is not going to get what they think they should.

That is surprising, I figured some of the MY13 FRSs would be selling for around 12k these days.

Well if the average reported price of a "clean" one is $13 K then obviously some are selling for $12K. Probably get them even cheaper in some regions. The good news is that they seem to have stabilized in value at around that mark.

LOL with my mileage and condition mine ain't worth shit! Probably could pick it up used off some shady back lot for under $10K

Well, you probably could get a couple thousand more, if you would wash it and shovel all the food wrappers out of the cabin ......

It gets washed at least weekly all year round. I take all the wrappers/coffee cups out daily. Don't think there is anything that I could do to increase the value. At this rate I will probably have to pay somebody to take it after a few more years.

Lately I've seen several in my area listed at $12K to $13K. They almost always have a salvage title from "minor damage, car looks and drives like new!"

Just seeing them listed doesn't mean that's what they're getting for them, but I'm still under the impression it's not easy to find an unwrecked '13 or '14 for less than $15K in my neck of the woods.

Yea I think when I was looking at CarMax they just have a higher mark up. I think it's a solid business and people trust their reputation and quality of products. I guess the same could be said for most dealers. It's a lot more comfortable for most to buy a vehicle from a dealer than from craigslist.

I paid $19,5 for my certified used monogram at the Toyota dealership. There was also one at the local CarMax for $22,5 in similar condition and mileage. I had looked at lower quality dealerships and craigslist before and Toyota and CarMax both had examples that were marked improvements over most of the others. Still, when you're no haggle and you're blowing dealership certified used out of the water, I struggle to see why anyone wastes their time with you.

The last time I was shopping at CarMax they had a "no haggling" policy, the price you see is final. Is that still true?

Yep. It's very successful because most people are really afraid of negotiating.

I know nothing about CarMax but can/will they negotiate on other add ons (i.e. trade in, extended warranty, whatever) like Scion would. Scion's "no haggle" policy was pretty strict but the dealers had loads of ways around it for anybody that wanted to negotiate. The price of the car could remain fixed but the added value could go pretty high.

You just nailed my ultimate resale price for any car I own. If it's worth more than about double scrap value when I'm done with it then I'm doing something wrong.

That's also why I can't buy some of those classic cars I want. I'd drive the value right out of them.
