Nissan Still Hasn't Given Up On The IDx Sports Car

Quote:
Back in November 2013, Nissan revealed the unique IDx sports car concepts to the world. Adorned in retro-styled bodywork, the IDx seemed primed to tackle the Toyota 86 and Mazda MX-5 in the affordable sports car market.

Unfortunately, in the three years preceding its debut, the IDx hasn’t been built. However, the Japanese marque has revealed that it still has interest in bringing the sports car to the market.

While speaking to Motoring at the Detroit Auto Show, Nissan chief designer Shiro Nakamura said that the automaker is still exploring the possibility of a production version - despite some company officials saying otherwise in the past.

“It’s a nice car and nice design. I cannot say anything more than that. We are exploring many opportunities and that is one of the opportunities that we are exploring. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything more than that,” he said.

At the vehicle’s launch, Nissan said that the IDx catered towards young and middle-aged buyers and mentioned it could be fitted with a compact naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter engine delivering around 150 hp.

Interesting rendering, a mix of the Gripz concept and Z.

New Nissan Trademark Application has us Excited

Quote:
Will some elements of the Nissan IDx live on?

Nissan has filed a trademark application for “NISSAN IMX,” suggesting a new concept is in development. The new trademark is a bit similar to the IDx Concept, which although it was well-received, never headed to production. At the time when Nissan confirmed the IDx got axed, the company did say some of its styling may live on in a front-wheel-drive sports car. Could the Nissan IMX trademark bring that to fruition?

It’s likely the Nissan IMX trademark will be formatted to “IMx” if it is used, just like how IDx was formatted. Unfortunately there isn’t much else to the trademark application, but it is for *takes deep breath* “Vehicles for locomotion by land, air, water or rail and structural parts and fittings therefor, namely, automobiles; electric vehicles, namely, electric automobiles, wagons, trucks, vans, sport utility vehicles, buses, recreational vehicles (RV) namely, campers, motor homes and fifth-wheel trailers; sports cars, racing cars, bicycles, lorries, fork lift trucks, including towing tractors, and structural parts and fittings therefor; Brake pads for land vehicles; Vehicle bumpers; Safety devices for land vehicles, namely, airbags; mudguards; Vehicle accessories, namely, air pumps and license plate frames.”

Have to say it but the 510 reminds me of when the Japanese got beat pretty badly in WWII. A mere 20 years later, looks like they recovered and came 3rd in Olympic gold. It is going to take an Olympian effort of sorts to make this into the most ethereal(English definition; not Russian) of light rwd automobiles.
I have been trying hard to like this... Failed... Its FUGLY....

Also IMO....

People are saying they like the retro look, Its looks as retro as one of the space shuttles from the original Star Trek series.

I guess a 1960s TV shows idea of a futuristic space shuttle could be classed as 'Retro'.

I like(d) the IDX concept myself.

I do think Nissan would have still screwed it up by putting a sluggish CVT with fake shifts in it.

I really hope they do well on the new Z. I personally would like it smaller and maybe with a nice Turbo 4 or a sweet Inline 6.

I don't the Z will ever be desirable as long as they keep building it on a platform for luxury cars and SUVs.

I wish Nissan would make a new S platform, and use that to make both the Z as well as a Silvia/240sx replacement.

This^^. I'm personally a fan of the grips concept. Tone it down some, put a turbo four in it and make it small like the crz. I'd be sold.
