Huh, you learn something new everyday, seems like it was sold as a Cosmo in the US.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_...2.80.931981.29

It's also pretty apparent that until the RX-7, earlier RX's were called 'RX's as a marketing/rebadging effort for other regions, the RX-7 was the first car designated worldwide as an "RX" sports car from the ground up RX-2 were Capella's or 626's, RX-3 was the Grand Familia/Savannah, RX-4 was Luce/929, RX-5 was a Cosmo and hypothetically I suppose the original Cosmo would be the RX-1 in spirit.

bah, tl;dr stretched ND chassis just like the NC/RX-8 combo and if they can make a Cayman fighter they will but still have the option to play in the $30k realm.

Edit: Sounds like they'll revive the RX-7 nameplate, personally wish they would go to 9 to signify a step forward but oh well, minor disagreements.

Heh, maybe they'll go fill in the gap with RX-5 and 6...
The RX-7 and RX-8 line are far more well known than the other cars, though, and the 8 was so named because it was bigger, not newer. There were three generations of the RX-7, and the numbers didn't increase each time.

I would say RX-9 would be a good name if they were doing a hybrid, but they've said that won't be the case anytime soon. There's always the possibility of doing one in the future.

No, the RX-8 was so named because it was a different configuration of car than the 7 or any previous RX. The numbering has nothing to do with size, as the RX-7 was certainly smaller than RX-3 and RX-4 station wagons.

The RX-7 name had multiple generations because it was several iterations of the same type of car, with shared styling cues etc.

As I said, nobody knew what the RX-3 and RX-4 were by the time the RX-8 came out. It's possible for numbering schemes to change over the course of several decades. Mazda's current scheme is similar to BMW's, a higher number is a bigger car.

At any rate, I trust Mazda's people to know what their own numbering schemes are.

That's like saying nobody knew what a Z28 Camaro was when the new one came out

Agreed numbering schemes can change, I just see calling it the new '7' as a cheap marketing nostalgia grab, there's no technical reason a name is chosen, it's all marketing.

The RX-8 was new and different, calling the new car a 7 wouldn't be a bad thing, but to me would signify a step back, not necessarily a bad thing because all the series of the 7 were pretty damn good.

If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, acts like Toyota's FT-1 (whoopse meant ft86), so we're probably about 3 years away from being able to pick one up at the dealership.

Edit: OPTIMISTICALLY

Seeing as we're still waiting on a Skyactiv-D engine in the US, we may never get it at all...

Edit 2: Give me a suspension as capable as the Miata and a buzzing beehive under the hood at an affordable price and I'm probably in.
That concept is a million miles away from a production model. I hope they bring it here, but it may be two cars away for me, instead of an option for the next car.

The RX-8's chassis code was FE, this would be FF if they don't start a new series.

I think if they are building a car that has essentially the same parameters as the previous RX-7, then it definitely makes sense from a technical standpoint. And of course it has a marketing bonus, but I wouldn't call that cheap unless they build something completely unworthy of the name.

The RX-VISION looks too long to be an RX-7 to me. But they did say the real car could be smaller.

Those who have seen the Mazda RX-Vision concept in Tokyo say photos don’t really do it justice. Videos are the next best thing, although we’re sure they’re still a far cry from seeing it in the metal.

Even so, they offer the best look at what is probably the most exciting reveal of late 2015. It’s not a production car, but it’s Mazda’s way of announcing they are thinking about making something like this for the road, and that it will have a Wankel rotary engine.

The styling is simply gorgeous, especially the side profile and RX-7-reminiscent butt. It looks like a modern Mazda with Kodo design, but it has hints of the company’s past sports glories – you can even see it translated into a facelift for the new MX-5 in 2 – 3 years’ time.

Too bad Mazda said nothing about it at the Tokyo motor show, other than the fact it does confirm their intention to create a rotary sports car in the not too distant future.

According to Mazda, the RX-Vision, “represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality.”
