I'm staying NA though, so if that's all they do, I'll have to rely on someone else.

My neighbor and I have a good relationship. I can borrow tools whenever I want to. My neighbor owns a hammer. I still bought one for myself. Too cheap you say? My neighbor owns a chainsaw. I still bought one for myself. Still too cheap? My neighbor owns a bandsaw. I still bought one for myself. Gimping the software is like a way to prevent me from borrowing my neighbor's tools. Well, he borrowed my lawnmower a year ago, saw how great it was, and bought one for himself. I went to the library. I discovered authors I love. I bought many of their books. I went onto YouTube and watched a Macklemore video for free. I liked what I heard. I went and bought the album.

Tuning involves data logging and time. It's not well-suited to people sharing cables and hardware. People want logging. They want to know what's happening much of the time. The will buy hardware. However, they are less likely to buy limited hardware.

If you only had to use that hammer once and it cost $400 to buy one I'm betting you would have just used your neighbors.

Enormous holes in your analogy. You're not borrowing a tool, you're getting 100% of the product without paying for it, and it doesn't go away when you give it back to the original owner. At this point I'm thinking you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. Please troll elsewhere.

Tactrix + Open ECU have been around for many years. Not that many people are trading tunes or cables. And all forums are against trading tunes made by companies.

In many other markets you have to buy a proprietary flashing device. That is only usable on one car while it is married to it and with most of those it is not tunable unless you have the dealer software (that is typically quite a bit more expensive). There are only a couple markets were there is only a small purchase required to tune the vehicle. With what is required in the modern ECU's I do not see that changing any time soon, as people cracking the ecus, developing the rom tables, and the dataloging algorithms should be paid for there time. I understand every one wants the cheap open device but there is a lot to be said for having something developed and continuing development on a commercial level.

It's $495. I just spent over $800 on some tires that are definitely going to wear out. Then I'll have to buy some more for this same car.

I think a one time fee of five hundred bucks per car that goes directly to people who are doing something positive for the community in exchange for permanent hardware that will have resale value is money well spent.

Does the tune that comes with it fix the factory tip-in knock. Also do you plan on a header tune ?

thanks

Yes it was one of the first things that was addressed. On our test cat, we would log/hear knock during throttle blips at low rpm. So the throttle based transient retard map was adjusted accordingly. Also changed was the throttle based acceleration enrichment which recent the brief lean spot that happens with the sfock tune after every fast shift. Advancing the exhaust timing helped with knock resistance in a big way too!

1,000th post!

I agree. And when I sell the car, I could probably get $300 or more for the tablet.

With ECUtek, after spending close to $1000, what can I recoup later?

Having a physical thing to resell is better than ethereal licenses and locked tunes.

Can't wait to order.

The cost of s FI tune in addition to this tablet probably isn't any lower than Ecutek. And we don't even know if there will be good vortec, innovate, avo tunes for this. They need to package it with a FI kit for it to have a real impact?

Once FI maps are developed, the tunes are free to download and fully editable by end users. We have already been asked to tune a couple boosted FA20s so those tunes will be available to everyone when complete. Think of this as just a convenient transport mechanism that allows full open tuning/sharing/etc,, diagnostics and (soon) datalogging/realtime data viewing. For those vendors who insist on locking their tunes (making them unreadable) we still have an option for them as well. But at the end of the day, we feel IP isn't in the map itself but rather how it is applied to individual cars.
