Ah! It's called "alcantara", and I agree, it's not the greatest. The fake carbon fiber was goofy as well, though.

Having driven a Tesla Model S For a couple days last week, I can say the Alcantara interior is the worst ever. Especially in a dash. Hideous. Looks old within days.

At least they had the sense not to put it on the steering wheel, where it gets grunged up and disgusting in a matter of months, and can't really be cleaned.
