This will be my 3rd winter with my BRZ. The car gets around fine in the winter. You'll be fine with studded or studless winter tires regardless of whichever you choose. The biggest problem is starting from a stop. You will have to go very easy on the gas or else your rear end will slide out. Some weight in the back will help with this tremendously. Just don't put too much weight or the rear will swing out whenever you make a turn.

^^ exactly this.

I would be light on the wait, maybe one or two bags of salt. ensure you have winter tires (Studs certainly help) and...can this car start in second? That was my trick for getting moving in my mustang GT..no idea if the FRS has the torque for it though (I do not drive mine in winter)

I always found myself using 2nd gear because the 1-2 shift is usually impossible when the transmission is cold. Also, yes, there enough torque to get going in 2nd, more than enough for frosty pavement let alone ice and snow. Plus, you're already in the right gear for hooning around with then.

Regarding the weight in the trunk question, I found a bit of weight helps (~80lbs is what I used) but only in the scenario when you are on sheer ice at an intersection and pointing uphill (RWD's Achilles heel), and then only slightly. I didn't bother last winter and it didn't hold me back. I found that once you get a bit of acceleration the weight transfer allows more acceleration, etc. With this you'll find that after the first ten feet from an icy intersection you will be able to out accelerate almost all FWD vehicles - the same weight transfer hurts them.

In my experience the key to winter driving in this car is 2nd gear, keep the wheel slip to a minimum, and traction/stability control OFF. Also key is top tier winter tires, don't cheap out on these. This will be my fourth winter in the car and I'm looking forward to it.
