Ya my story is almost the same as far as helping my dad at 6 or 7. It usually ended with me having to perform first aid though as the guy had no concept of tool safety (or the proper tool for that matter). Only man I ever saw that could take most of an engine apart with nothing but a screwdriver and hammer and still not so much as ruin a bolt head.

For my dad, an oxyacetylene torch was the cure for rusted fasteners and door hinges. Most of the time it worked great.

That was a lot closer to the norm then. We would pour a bowl of carbon tet from a 5-gallon can to clean parts then toss it out onto the dead spot behind our work shed. That's also where all the used oil went. Just dug a little hole and poured it in. Sometimes we would pour it over the trash before we lit the burn barrel. Wooo, that was smoky!

Our used oil got cut 50% with gas and went into one of those big backpack sprayers. Then I would pull it up and down the laneway in a red wagon and spray it all over the gravel. We rarely had dust from that laneway.

That is only when it didn't get strained and poured back in the engine of course.

The local airport where my parents both learned to fly was at the end of a looong dirt road. The airport had a tank truck that collected all the used oil. It had a long pipe across the back with holes drilled. They oiled down their dirt road with it. That thing was among the first of my childhood memories. That and the strange smells of chemicals in puddles out behind the hangar where they did all the engine work.

Fuck it. They needed a reality check. They should learn more about the nickel mines up in your neck of the woods.

Not so much anymore as many (most?) are now a deserted wasteland. Although I guess that in it's self would be an eye opener.

I have now been up for 24 hours straight. Once again giving credence to Ichi's theory.

I'm pretty sure that is the exact definition of a "random fucking thought.
