For example: Newbie signs up and upon account verification, it auto redirects them to the FAQs thread. Not too familiar with the newer vBulletin.

Yep 3:48 here. I have to be at the plant 2 hours away to meet with the night shift at 6:30. Contrary to popular opinion I do work every now and then.

There should be a quiz.
Give them some technical but common and simple questions and they have to do a search for the answer.
They can't join until they pass.

If they can't pass, let them join after failing but give them some kind of avatar forever shaming them.
