Then what's the deal with the whole "Steve Jobs gets a new lease every 6mo so he doesn't need plates"? BS?

Officially it's 90 days.... or whenever you get your plates.

Unofficially, no one gives a shit.

The 6 months is probably in reference to the Temporary Purchasing Operating Copy (the little slip of paper they display on the front windsheild when you buy a car). This copy is only valid for 6 months or until you receive your plates, whichever comes first.

Tell them to send you the paperwork through the mail so your lawyer can look at it. Don't give them any information, not even the address to mail the paperwork.
You won't hear from them again.
Yea, I just called the SF police station and they have no information of my license plate and the "police report #" I gave is incorrect. Now i'm calling the actual State Farm insurance company and apparently this is a legit claim. I told State Farm I've never been to SF since i was 10. Now they are "looking" into it and will get back to me in the next couple of days. Damn this is such a headache

Then you have the people in the Bay Area that don't put on plates so they can bypass the toll booths.

There may not be a police report filed, that's why there's no record at the police station. Collection agency may have just BS'd a number to get you to pay. Shady at best.

You have insurance, they should take care of this for you. If you don't want to involve your insurance carrier, then it'll be a headache for you, but not impossible. After all, State Farm is probably just going off of a report by their claimant, who may have mis-read the plate or even completely falsified the information.

Just ask what date and time this occurred, then provide proof that you were in SoCal. (could be a purchase receipt, social media tag, school class attendance, anything that puts you in SoCal). Also, their description of the car that allegedly did the hit and run would help, as it likely doesn't match yours.

Also, all the "lawyer up" comments are, IMO, silly. Do you really want to pay an attorney to handle this for you? probably not. Do you even have a legit claim? Probably not (yet).

Time for a update of what is going on with this hit and run. I have called their insurance which is state farm and when I was transferred the 3rd time by them I finally got someone who knew what they were doing ish. Long story short I finally got them to tell me what car the "witness saw" when it was reported as a hit and run and it turned out to be a Jeep. Didn't know fuji industry owned jeep now lol. So they want me to send them a picture showing my car is a brz and not a jeep. But they guy advised me to let my insurance deal with the problem since they want docs proving my car and making this all "Legal". Now my insurance is involved and I'll have to wait till a adjuster calls me so that i can give them a Statement. Man this is such a headache, if only they checked the actual make of the car and not just trust the license plate.

A copy of your registration should be sufficient proof. No need to involve your insurance really, but if should be fine either way. Let them deal with the headache, that's what you're paying them for anyways.
