FYI for the clueless: DOT doesn't approve anything. The marking means the manufacturer is saying "yes, it meets this standard and if found not within spec we will accept the fine."

You can get terribly cheap crap lights that aren't even close to DOT specs that have the DOT stamps on them. Why? Because the seller and manufacturer are tiny and hard to catch so there's no punishment.

The Europeans actually test and certify stuff, so that's different.

I also find it funny that the DOT lights for this car use red turn signals when amber is 100% fine...

But let's not forget each state has their own laws for motor vehicles. Even stock cars can be found illegal: http://jalopnik.com/5589270/maryland...lights-illegal

I remember reading this article in the past regarding the tail lights of the g8. The difference being that the guy tinted his tail lights. In essence they are no longer the DOT approved lights since being modified.

The Valenti lights are not DOT approved no matter how you look at it. Just bad luck to get caught.

Nope, no tint or anything on that G8...

Valenti's could be DOT if they simply added adhesive reflectors in the box to stick to your car (as illuminated rear side markers aren't necessary). Not to mention they're E-marked, but that's a whole different argument about DOT's shitty specs...

Update 7/15/15

Just got off phone with friend. She called to let me know it is a fixer ticket for about $250 unless she gets rid of Valenti's and took it in so that local CHP signs it after verifying it has been 'fixed.' (which she got signed already w/o changing 'em)

She went earlier this week to CHP office with intention to, "yell" at officers, and was instead told if she contacted the manufacturer and they added that shiny red reflector, "they are supposed to have," then they'd be ok. Of course, we all know manufacturer doesnt put them in because that's just how they are. Buyer beware yade yade yada...thats not the point.

They also mentioned she could just get some red reflector tape from local Pep Boys (they still around?) and place two 2x4 inch strips near tail lights, on tail lights or on upper bumper. Then only reason she could get pulled over would be due to curiosity on why she has those tapes...if someone took enough interest.

Unfortunately she cannot just swap them for OEM and fight it because the CHP who pulled her over even 'drew' a sketch of what her tail lights looked like at the time she was stopped. Looks like, 'a long backwards "C" inside a box' as she tried to describe it.

On her way out, she asked some officer outside the dept getting out of their car what could have attracted them to her vehicle, to which he answered the color of the car and her rims, which are indeed attractive. She has the lightning red? Or whatever its called+tinted windows (20ish %) and enkei ekm#? painted in gold rims.

She said he signed her fixer ticket without checking her lights. That rebel of a beautiful girl is keeping her lights... and here I was hoping she'd sell 'em to me cheap or trade me haha <3 her

Overall, yes bad luck. Thanks guys for all the help.

p.s.

p.p.s. Sorry for confusion in typing. Singular and plural. blah blah watching Breaking Bad not paying attention.
