i usually go a bit slower over the effected area, and then quickly go around the surrounding area.

so let's say there was a scratch 2 inches long, i would probably work in an 8 inches past the scratch.

Look on my facebook page i posted earlier, there's a pic of a blue car that got keyed, i did some wet sanding to blend it a bit and it came out pretty good.
